Position: Program Support Assistant (Credentialing Specialist)

Primary purpose of this position

Perform credentialing and technical duties in support of the Credentialing and VETPro programs and functions, ensures compliance with guidelines of the Department of Veterans Affairs, The Joint Commissions, Office of Inspector General and Government Accountability Office. The Credentialing Specialist is assigned to the Credentialing and Privileging Office, which is under the Chief of Staff at North Texas VA Medical Center in Dallas, TX.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/04/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement:
Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.

An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Note:

Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education s described below:

GS-05 Experience

Must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position.

Qualifying specialized experience includes:
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of credentialing and privileging operations.
  • Communicate factual and procedural information clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Gather and analyze basic facts and draw conclusions.

OR

Education:

Four years above high school in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.(TRANSCRIPT

REQUIRED)

OR Combination of

Education and Experience:

Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

GS-6 Specialized Experience

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Vet Pro policies, including but not limited to, Vet Pro Data Integrity, VAMC Level access control, mandatory annual Vet Pro security and confidentiality training, and mandatory annual privacy act training.
  • Ability to communicate orally technical information to a diverse group of individuals with varying levels of understanding.
  • Knowledge of the contacts required for verification of information in health care provider files.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to assure competence/appropriateness of credentials requested.
  • Ability to communicate in writing to prepare emails, letters, and reports.
  • Skill in using software applications such as word processing and data bases and internet database applications for data entry, file maintenance and data retrieval.
  • Attention to detail is required to analyze applications, documents, files and other material pertaining to the credentialing program.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and meet deadlines.
