Code Enforcement Officer I

The Code Enforcement Officer I investigates, inspects, and enforces municipal, land development, and property maintenance codes within city boundaries. Schedules and performs systematic property maintenance inspections to maintain or achieve minimum property standards.

Essential Functions

• Conducts and performs inspections on city properties, projects, buildings, and developments to ensure compliance with all municipal, state, and federal regulations.
• Identifies, determines, and compiles non-compliant concerns and addresses issues with appropriate parties; takes accurate data and information concerning code violations and enforces code compliance.
• Investigates non compliant problems and makes recommendations for corrective action; communicates and collaborates with developers and other individuals to address code violations and make changes; performs follow up work and assistance as needed.
• Creates accurate and professional notices of violation; takes photographs and gathers evidence while performing inspections; issues citations and responds to citizen complaints.
• Educates and provides information to citizens, developers, and the general public; interprets laws and regulations while educating public on laws regulations and code standards.
• Drafts, maintains, and edits documents regarding inspections, code enforcement activities, and code violations;
• Remains up to date on all current code standards and changes in regulations; maintains certifications and attends professional development as needed.
• Drives vehicles throughout the city to perform inspections and address compliance and code violations.
• Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED.
• EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of heavy citizen/customer service contact resolving complaints and/or conflicts, service and/or billing disputes.
• EQUIVALENCY: A current Code Enforcement Officer Trainee certification (or higher) issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) will meet the education and experience requirements.
• LICENSE and CERTIFICATION: Valid driver's license with good driving record. Must obtain certification as a Code Enforcement Officer Trainee issued by TDLR within probationary period.
• OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.

• Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.

This position requires an ONLINE exam that covers the following categories:
Reading Comprehension, Applying Policies, Sentence Clarity, Business Correspondence, Spelling. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be sent a secure link to take the exam.

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications. For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position. Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed.

A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.
