Overview

The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist supports, develops, and implements the safety and environmental programs in the Department of Transportation & Public Works.

Essential Functions
  • Trains, informs, and educates all departmental personnel on the standards and regulations of how to stay safe, follow health protocols, and reduce impact on the environment.
  • Identifies, determines, and addresses needed areas of change and makes recommendations to improve EHS operations.
  • Participates in safety inspections, provides safety and health expertise, and evaluates jobs against all safety, health, and environmental standards.
  • Provide guidance, training, and education on EHS standards applicable to departmental operations.
  • Assists with environmental inspections and audits as needed.
  • Performs a wide range of administrative activities including, but not limited to drafting monthly reports, tracking safety audits and findings, and monitoring relevant data input and management.
  • Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Skills And Abilities
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of Federal and State rules, regulations and standards.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to provide guidance, training and education to ensure compliance with policies and regulations to various audiences.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines and projects; at times with limited supervision.
  • Ability to review regulations and applicability to departmental operations.
  • Ability to analyze process and procedural standards.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing for all levels in the department.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Education

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or Social Science.
Experience
  • Two (2) years of direct, cumulative experience in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs, including safety and environmental training, hazardous materials coordination, ISO-related program support, incident investigations, compliance monitoring, and corrective action development.
Equivalency
  • High School diploma or GED and six (6) years of the stated work experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Associate degree (or higher) in a non-related field and four (4) years of the stated work experience would meet the education and experience requirement.
License
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Applicants who hold a valid driver's license with a good driving record formed in a state other than Texas are required to obtain a Texas driver's license within the probationary period.
Other Requirements
  • Availability to work varying shifts including nights and weekends.
Preferences
  • Certified Safety Manager (CSM) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certification preferred.
Salary Range

$62,379.20 - $76,585.60

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
