POSITION SUMMARY

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Suspicion of Cancer Clinic at UT Southwestern Medical Center plays a key role in the early evaluation, diagnosis, and coordination of care for patients referred with concern for new or undiagnosed malignancy. This position focuses on timely assessment, diagnostic workup, patient education, and close collaboration with multidisciplinary oncology teams within the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.

This role is well suited for an APP who is clinically strong, detail‑oriented, and comfortable managing diagnostic complexity while providing patient‑centered care.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required:

Education

  • Master's degree or higher in nursing, documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
    OR
  • Graduate of a master’s degree or higher Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Licensure as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by Texas State Board of Nursing. Authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
    OR
  • Licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board.
    AND
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified by the American Heart Association or Red Cross based on the UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical-thinking, and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred:

  • Experience in oncology, hematology, internal medicine, or diagnostic clinics
  • Prior experience in an academic medical center or high‑volume outpatient setting
  • Ability to manage complex patients and coordinate multidisciplinary care
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations for patients referred with suspicion of malignancy
  • Review and assess abnormal imaging, laboratory findings, and concerning clinical presentations
  • Initiate and coordinate appropriate diagnostic workups, including labs, imaging, biopsies, and referrals
  • Collaborate with oncology physicians, radiology, pathology, nursing, patient navigation, and scheduling teams
  • Communicate results and next steps clearly and compassionately to patients and families
  • Facilitate timely transition of care to disease-specific oncology teams once diagnosis is established
  • Document clinical encounters accurately and thoroughly in the electronic medical record
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinic workflow optimization
  • Adhere to UT Southwestern policies, regulatory requirements, and patient safety standards
