The Lab Assistant (Phlebotomist) is responsible for performing high-quality phlebotomy services and supporting the clinical laboratory's daily operations. This role includes obtaining and processing blood specimens, performing bedside and point-of-care testing, maintaining specimen integrity, and ensuring accurate documentation in the electronic health record. Under the direction of the Department Director, the Lab Assistant contributes to quality assurance activities, assists with inventory management, and supports regulatory compliance.
The position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering respectful, relationship-based care to patients, families, and internal partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Education & Training:
- Bachelor's degree in a life science or equivalent required
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a laboratory environment with similar functions or experience in a non-waived specialty/subspecialty of service. (Moderate Complexity Lab)
- Licensure/Certification/Registration:
- Phlebotomy Technician certification required
- CPR/BLS certifications required
- Key Skills:
- Proficient with Microsoft and able to quickly learn new software as needed. EMR (CPSI, Epic, Cerner) experience required.
- Demonstrates strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, time-management, and customer service skills. Actively listens to understand the needs of both internal and external customers and consistently treats all individuals with respect. Applies relationship-based care by prioritizing meaningful connections among caregivers, patients, families, and colleagues to support high-quality care delivery.
- Able to maintain patient confidentiality.
- Ability to organize and coordinate diverse activities.
- Familiarity with state and federal regulations.
