Director of Payroll

Mackenzie Stuart is currently partnered on a confidential search with a multi-entity, 5,000+ employee company for a Director of Payroll.

The Director of Payroll will lead payroll operations through continued growth, system complexity, and organizational change.

• Own end-to-end payroll operations for 5,000+ employees across multiple entities and states
• Lead payroll integration and execution for mergers, acquisitions, and large-scale employee onboarding events
• Ensure ongoing compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax and wage regulations
• Drive process improvements, controls, and automation to improve accuracy, scalability, and timeliness
• Partner closely with HR, Finance, and Legal on payroll strategy, audits, and reporting
• Manage payroll vendors, system upgrades, and periodic implementations

• 5+ years of payroll leadership experience in mid-to-large organizations (2,000+ employees required)
• Demonstrated experience supporting M&A activity or rapid workforce expansion
• Hands‑on expertise with enterprise payroll systems such as UKG (Ulti Pro), ADP Workforce Now, Workday Payroll, Ceridian Dayforce, or SAP
• Strong multi‑state payroll, tax, and compliance knowledge
• Proven ability to lead teams and operate effectively in fast‑paced, change‑driven environments
