the Role
We're looking for a Senior Terraform Developer with architect-level infrastructure-as-code expertise to join our team. This person will take requirements and requests from stakeholders and independently design, build, and deliver production-grade Terraform solutions with minimal oversight. You'll be a go-to authority on infrastructure automation, module design, and IaC best practices across the organization.
What You'll Do- Translate infrastructure and platform requests from the team into well-architected Terraform solutions, working independently from requirements to delivery.
- Design, build, and maintain reusable, versioned Terraform modules for multi-environment, multi-account/multi-cloud infrastructure.
- Own the architecture of the team's IaC codebase: state management strategy, module structure, workspace/environment separation, and CI/CD pipelines for Terraform.
- Review Terraform code quality, security, and cost implications; set and enforce standards for the broader engineering org.
- Troubleshoot complex state, drift, and dependency issues, and lead remediation efforts.
- Partner with security, platform, and application teams to ensure infrastructure changes meet compliance and governance requirements.
- Evaluate and integrate tooling (policy-as-code, testing frameworks, module registries) to mature the IaC practice.
- Document architecture decisions and provide clear runbooks/guidance so requests can be handed off with minimal back-and-forth.
- 10+ years of general software/infrastructure engineering experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on Terraform experience, including designing module architecture from scratch (not just consuming existing modules).
- Demonstrated ability to take a request or requirement and deliver a finished, production-ready solution with limited guidance or hand-holding.
- Deep knowledge of at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP); multi-cloud experience a plus.
- Strong grasp of Terraform state management, work spaces, remote backends, and collaboration patterns at scale.
- Experience with CI/CD for infrastructure (e.g., Atlantis, Terraform Cloud/Enterprise, Git Lab CI, Git Hub Actions, Jenkins).
- Familiarity with policy-as-code (Sentinel, OPA/Conftest) and automated testing for infrastructure (Terratest or similar).
- Solid understanding of networking, security groups/IAM, and cloud cost optimization.
- Excellent written communication — able to document decisions and hand off work clearly to a distributed/remote team.
- Experience with Kubernetes provisioning via Terraform.
- Contributions to public or internal Terraform module registries.
- Prior experience mentoring or leading a small team of infrastructure engineers.
