Underwriter Specialist – Hanover MarineHanover Marine is seeking an Underwriter Specialist to join our growing team in either Dallas or Houston, TX. This is a full‑time, exempt, hybrid opportunity.

Position OverviewAs an Underwriter Specialist, you will identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal specialty accounts that drive profitable growth and align with Marine goals. You will apply technical, sales, and analytical skills to provide insurance solutions that help Hanover’s customers manage risk, make appropriate risk decisions, and manage a book of business with moderate to high technical complexity.
In This Role, You Will:- Know and apply underwriting concepts including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification, coverage implications, and loss analysis.
- Use all appropriate underwriting tools, disciplines and strategies to ensure underwriting guidelines are followed.
- Understand pricing components and rating methodology and correlate pricing to exposures.
- Ask key questions when presented with minimal information to ascertain full scope and key exposures.
- Complete file documentation according to best‑practice guidelines and clearly explain account decisions.
- Provide clear and concise rating instructions for quotes prior to proposal generation.
- Manage assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business and portfolio management goals using proven pipeline and marketing practices.
- Develop an understanding of various financial reporting information and insurance performance measures in risk management.
- Understand market factors that affect pricing and relate them to individual books, agency books, the region, and countrywide.
- Prepare or analyze information on underwriting decisions, rates, requirements, company appetite, status, and declinations.
- Collaborate across Hanover departments to leverage growth opportunities.
- Identify, solicit, pipeline, negotiate, and close accounts aligned with business strategy.
- Stay current on state/territory regulations and trends.
- Leverage market and competitor information to enhance relationships and decision‑making.
- Prioritize and develop relationship management and producer activities to build trust and secure commitment.
- Work with a franchise perspective to identify cross‑sell opportunities within other lines of business and customer segments.
- Partner with other business units to deliver comprehensive insurance solutions.
- Demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of Hanover’s products and appetite, communicating Hanover’s position at the point of sale.
- Maintain rigorous sales practices using all systems, sales tools and disciplines outlined in the best‑practice program.
- Make presentations to agents and customers, utilizing department and specialty partners to augment the sales process.
- Effectively use Claims and Loss Control to display service and technical expertise with current and future customers.
To Apply:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of Inland Marine or standard commercial lines underwriting experience.
- 3+ years of experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business and complex accounts.
- Ability to adapt quickly to change, analyze and solve problems, and be open to new ways of thinking.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Teamwork and collaboration orientation.
- Prioritization and desk‑management skills.
- Ability to travel as needed.
