Role Description

The Houston office of Walters Balido & Crain seeks an experienced Contract Attorney to assist with insurance defense and civil litigation matters proceeding to arbitration. The ideal candidate has hands‑on experience with construction defect, property damage, first‑party property disputes, and coverage disputes, and is comfortable managing arbitration preparation from start to finish.

Responsibilities
  • Support counsel in all phases of arbitration for insurance defense and civil litigation cases
  • Conduct legal research on liability, damages, and coverage issues
  • Draft and revise arbitration briefs, position statements, motions, and discovery responses
  • Review claim files, construction documents, expert reports, and investigative materials
  • Prepare exhibits, witness lists, exhibit lists, pre‑hearing briefs, summaries, timelines, and hearing notebooks
  • Assist with witness preparation, including outlines and Q&A
  • Attend depositions and prepare summary and analysis
  • Evaluate settlement opportunities and contribute to case strategy discussions
  • Communicate professionally with adjusters, opposing counsel, experts, and arbitrators
  • Ensure compliance with arbitration rules and case management orders (AAA, JAMS, court‑ordered arbitration, private arbitrators)
Qualifications
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Texas
  • 2–5+ years of experience in insurance defense and/or civil litigation
  • Familiarity with arbitration procedures and evidence presentation
  • Strong drafting, analytical, and case‑evaluation skills
  • Ability to manage tasks independently and meet critical deadlines
  • High level of professionalism, organization, and confidentiality
  • Proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience evaluating construction defect and first‑party property claims, or working directly with insurance carriers
  • Background in subrogation, construction defect law, first‑party law, insurance law, premises liability, or general negligence cases
  • Prior participation in arbitration hearings or trial preparation
  • Ability to synthesize complex records into concise arguments
