Job SummaryUnder the immediate supervision of the Professional Standards Admin/CID Sergeant, the Detective is expected to perform comprehensive criminal investigations, law enforcement, and crime prevention work, and enforce State laws and BSW policies. In addition, the detective performs investigative work and general administrative activities in carrying out the direction of the Professional Standards Division Captain and the BSW Chief of Police.
Essential Functions- Respond to in-progress calls requiring immediate law enforcement assistance.
- Conduct criminal and special investigations, including domestic violence, burglaries, thefts, robberies, assaults, homicides, etc.
- Prepare case documentation for filing with the District Attorney and present case evidence in Court as required.
- Receive calls from and assist other law enforcement agencies in emergencies or with requests for investigation assistance.
- Coordinate with supervisor on progress and problems concerning assigned cases.
- Supervise crime scene investigations.
- Maintain records on investigative assignments.
- Perform duties in other areas of the Police Department when called upon.
- Assist other Detectives with follow-up investigations and actively gather evidence, question witnesses, and apprehend suspects.
- Assist fellow detectives by rotating in the responsibility of being on-call, adhering to the BSW on-call policy.
- Maintain, facilitate, and actively participate in the achievement of the BSW Mission, Goals, and Values.
- Provide information and guidance to the public/victims regarding case status and processes.
- Review reports submitted by officers and/or other Detectives to ensure completeness.
- Modern police methods and procedures, including crime prevention techniques.
- Criminal law, with particular emphasis on apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons accused of misdemeanors and felonies.
- Rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the preservation and presentation of evidence in court.
- Criminal investigation techniques and procedures, including crime scene investigation, interrogation, fingerprinting and photography.
- A clear understanding of the concepts and philosophy of Community Policing and Problem‑Oriented Policing.
- Principles of supervision and training.
- Use and care of firearms.
- Gather, assemble, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence.
- Draw logical conclusions from information and make proper recommendations.
- Interpret and apply laws and regulations.
- Train and mentor rotational Detectives in the full range of investigative procedures.
- Analyze situations quickly and accurately and take effective courses of action.
- Demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
- Practically apply the philosophy of Community Policing toward achieving the organizational mission statement.

- Education – H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent.
- Experience – Less than 1 Year of Experience.
Preferred Experience:
Five or more years of law enforcement experience, including three years as a detective, along with prior experience working with the sex crime and financial fraud units.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS within 30 days of hire.
- Licensed Peace Officer:
Lic Peace Officer required within 90 days of hire. (TCOLE Certification) - Driver’s License (TXDL):
