UT Southwestern Medical Center is the leading Academic Medical Center in the Dallas‑Fort Worth area, recognized nationally for excellence in patient care, research, and education. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller serves as a strategic financial partner with enterprise‑wide oversight of operations within the Accounting & Fiscal Services division. This role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, maintaining a strong internal controls environment, and driving regulatory compliance across the institution. The Controller will lead efforts to modernize and streamline financial processes, leveraging technology and best practices to build the scalability and operational efficiency required to support UTSW's expanding clinical, research, and academic enterprise.
Key areas of responsibility include financial reporting, audit management, technical accounting, policy development, and cross‑functional collaboration with operational and administrative leaders throughout the institution. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in the unique financial and regulatory landscape of academic medicine and possesses the leadership presence to influence and inspire a high‑performing team.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Required- Education – Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field
- Experience – 8 years of progressively responsible related experience, preferably in a healthcare and/or university environment and 3 years as a Controller
- Education – Master's Degree in a related field
- Experience – Academic medical center or healthcare strongly preferred
- Licenses and Certifications – CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
- Coordinates with a team of supervisors, managers, and directors to plan, organize, and direct the functions of general accounting operations, fiscal reports, accounts payable, facilities finance, payroll, and cash management for University operations.
- Identifies root issues and implements best practices that align with University needs and goals, as determined by the University's strategic plans. Determines and monitors the department's work priorities and labor activities for approximately 95 employees, including staffing levels, staff development, and training.
- Responsible for design, execution, and effectiveness of a system of internal controls, which provide reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, and financial information is reliable.
- Directs and coordinates audits performed by independent firms. Designs and implements policy and procedure changes based on findings.
- Ensures compliance with external regulatory reporting requirements and all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Generates the University's annual financial report and other required reports to governing entities including, but not limited to, the State of Texas.
- Responsible for the monthly preparation of financial reports, account reconciliations, and analysis that are accurate, timely, and in a format that is useful to senior leadership.
