Position Purpose
To ensure that product is inspected for quality including size, gauge and roll formation quality prior to shipment to customers, and that packaging and data collection is accurate for each order. Each employee considers food safety and consumer safety while performing work, participates in GMP and food safety training, follows GMP policy, and reports all food safety concerns with urgency.

Essential Functions and Basic DutiesFunctions: Under the direction of the Lead Operator and/or Production Supervisor, the Extrusion Operator Assistant ensures that product is inspected before shipment to customers. The position is backed up by other Operator Assistants or a Lead Operator.
Duties & Responsibilities Quality Control- Check job ticket extrusion instructions.
- Note any size or gauge tolerances.
- Note any special packaging or labeling instructions.
- Verify that the product conforms to job ticket specs, including size.
- Complete a “Size” chart (not S.P.C. charts).
- Understand the importance of size and gauge checks.
- Verify that gussets are set up correctly.
- Handle blocking, gels, blending problems, dirty die face, and check product for treat.
- Ensure proper packaging of products.
- Obtain proper packaging information from the job ticket.
- Know pallet and cradle sizes, as well as the location of packaging supplies.
- Package products neatly and professionally.
- Enter production data into the computer.
- Ensure correct data entries.
- Weigh every roll and notify the operator if it is incorrect, with all rolls weighed.
- Track all scrap and record it in data collection.
- Maintain correct job start and stop times.
- Obtain proper labeling information from the job ticket.
- Print labels accurately and neatly.
- Ensure labels are centered and aligned on the box.
- Complete pallet/bin labels correctly.
- Insert a white label with the correct weight into the core.
- Train for operator duties and be willing to learn downstream equipment and maintenance operations.
- Perform basic adjustments to the master roll winder.
- Thread all downstream equipment.
- Have a basic understanding of the extrusion process.
- Adjust tension on the winder and understand its effect on the roll.
- Keep tools and miscellaneous metal parts off the floor.
Company policies, procedures, and practices are implemented via this position. Quality of products is directly related to the effectiveness of individuals in this job. A broad base of current technical knowledge is required to ensure standards are met, and efficiencies are maintained. Problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities are essential for success.
Qualifications Education / CertificationHS Diploma or GED is preferred.
Required Knowledge- Previous manufacturing experience preferred.
None; on‑the‑job training is provided.
Skills / Abilities- Ability to read a tape measure.
- Basic math skills.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to pass a color‐blind test.
- Some previous computer data entry preferred.
- Quality of product shipped.
- Attendance.
- Ability to help other lines.
- Cleanliness of work area.
Employees are expected to work 12‑hour shifts on a monthly rotation schedule. The current shifts are from 7 AM – 7 PM (day) and 7 PM – 7 AM (night). Every 28 days these rotate between day and night. This is an hourly/non‑exempt position; overtime regulations apply. Holidays, sick leave, vacation, etc. are as dictated by the Shields employee handbook.
