Experience and Education Required
  • Graduate of NLN approved Nursing program and Bachelor's Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • 5 years experience as registered nurse and 2 years of management experience; specialty areas may have increased experience requirements as dictated by unit or standard of care

  • Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license under Nursing Licensure Compact-BNE upon hire
  • BCLC required upon hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) upon hire
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) upon hire
Job Duties
  • Develop and implement an effective action plan to improve performance in the department
  • Meet or exceed financial goals and objectives of the department
  • Provide direct patient care and/or function as "charge" position as needed
  • Seek out opportunities to teach and mentor other nursing personnel on a formal or informal basis
  • Evaluate and supervise provision of patient care by other personnel assigned to unit
  • Adhere and facilitate adherence by other personnel to all policies and procedures, code of ethics, JCAHO standards, and nationally recognized standards of nursing practice
  • Review nursing assignments and revise as necessary to meet specific needs of patients and/or to ensure adherence to policies and procedures
  • Implement disciplinary interventions, including termination, as appropriate and in compliance with policy
  • Participate in identification and resolution of physician, patient and/or family complaints
  • Report complaints and interventions to Guest Services and/or Department of Nursing in timely manner for adequate follow-up prior to patient's discharge
  • Review schedule and staffing plan with other Department of Nursing personnel to ensure adequate coverage of patient care needs on daily shift or shift-by-shift basis
  • Utilize staffing guidelines and/or patient acuity system and employ most cost effective option in providing appropriate patient care
  • Utilize resources in a manner which is appropriate and which optimizes resources for benefit of organization and patient population
  • Identify efficiency or cost saving ideas and report same to DON and/or CNO
  • Interview and make final decision regarding hiring of all nursing personnel for unit
  • Participate in development, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement activities
  • Complete performance reviews and orientation evaluations of nursing personnel
  • Implement termination of nursing personnel with approval from Chief Nursing Officer and/or Human Resources Manager
  • Provide immediate counseling of nursing personnel, up to and including suspension, as appropriate
  • Follow-up with accurate and timely written reports to Nursing and/or Human Resources Director
  • Generate and/or supervise generated occurrence reports as appropriate
  • Provide appropriate and timely follow-up and submit to DON
  • Conduct staff meetings and coordinate special projects, which may include educational activities, research projects, recruitment, and interdisciplinary and hospital committees
  • Collaborate with nursing staff and Nurse Educator to meet educational needs of current nursing personnel
  • Promote personal and professional growth of all nursing personnel by allowing opportunities for active participation in unit-based activities and appropriate patient care
  • Seek out opportunities to teach
  • Develop unit's annual capital and operational budgets with assistance from nursing administration personnel
  • Complete payroll editing at end of payroll cycle and maintain attendance records
  • Provide and support efforts to develop teamwork between all nursing personnel, employees and staff
  • Facilitate timely return of specialty equipment
  • Participate in routine and special care conferences
  • Demonstrate ability to function in "charge" role
  • Perform other duties as assigned
