Bachelor's Degree;
Graduate of an accredited Nursing program with BSN or higher - Experience
3 years clinical practice - Licenses and Certifications
(NLC) Nursing Licensure Compact – BNE Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license
(BLS) Basic Life Support course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)
(RN) Registered Nurse licensure by Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas
(NIHSS) National Institute of Health Stroke Scale

- Provides leadership and vision for the Stroke Program in terms of operations, services, and patient care, consistent with best practices and evidence‑based care.
- Serves as an active member of the University Hospitals Core Stroke Team, overseeing coordinated care of the stroke patient in terms of health prevention, health promotion, and rehabilitation.
- Identifies, tracks, and supports all inpatient stroke care provided in University Hospitals and reports findings/results on a monthly basis to the Stroke Committee, creating opportunities to teach and mentor other nursing and ancillary personnel.
- Coordinates and facilitates provision of educational opportunities for staff, physicians, patients, external providers of care, and the community.
- Identifies relevant areas for nursing research, initiates projects, and participates on research team outcomes.
- Leads and directs achievement in the provision of quality care to the stroke patient population, overseeing development of appropriate policies and procedures required for effective and efficient stroke care.
- Analyzes data and coordinates implementation of practice changes as needed; in conjunction with Clinical Education and Department Managers, coordinates education and verifies competence of staff performing NIHSS.
- Adheres to appropriate hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways, and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice.
- Incorporates ANA standards, professional practice model (Shared governance) and care delivery model (Relationship Based Care) into the provision of safe, quality patient care.
- Provides timely, confidential coaching and counseling of nursing personnel as appropriate and follows up with accurate reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.
- Assures first‑person reporting of events through RL Solutions; ensures all staff are competent in entering event reports and serves as a resource when necessary.
- Facilitates timely receipt of these reports for follow‑up by the Clinical Nurse Manager; notifies Nurse Manager/Risk Manager immediately of high‑risk situations.
- Actively participates in routine and special patient‑care conferences and promotes professional growth of staff by providing equal opportunities for participation in unit‑based activities, patient‑care/unit decisions, hospital committees, and continuing education.
- Collects information and maintains records regarding performance and contributions on an ongoing basis throughout the fiscal year; provides input and/or conducts annual performance reviews and orientation evaluation of personnel assigned to the unit.
- Coordinates self‑scheduling to maintain appropriate coverage for unit needs; maintains Kronos records on a daily basis, monitoring for trends that require intervention (e.g., late clock‑ins, incremental overtime, missed punches).
- Assumes delegated responsibility for inventory control of equipment and supplies to ensure safe and effective patient care; facilities timely return of rented or borrowed specialty equipment and solicits staff input regarding equipment and supply needs for the unit.
