This position works under the general supervision of a physician, advanced practice provider, and/or nursing leadership to provide nursing services in the care and treatment of patients.
UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center’s Surgery Specialty Unit (6 Green/Blue) provides multi-disciplinary and specialized care to patients requiring pre-surgical and post-surgical care from many specialties including:
- Plastic Surgery;
- Gynocological Surgery; and
UTSW’s Surgical Specialty Unit consists of 48 beds and is considered one of the busiest floors in the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, with 25-28 new admits in a typical day.
The Surgical Registered Nurse II (RN II) has experience working with surgical and/or medical/surgical patients in a high-volume inpatient setting. This is the ideal floor for RNs seeking to challenge themselves professionally as both a learner and educator to the many students, residents, fellows, and new graduates on the Surgical Specialty floor. Highly collaborative and actively engaged, the Surgical Specialty RN are deeply involved in unit-based committees and are highly represented on UTSW’s hospital-wide committees as well.

- Education Graduate of an approved/accredited nursing program either by a governmental authority, nursing board, or by a licensing authority that has jurisdiction over approval/accreditation of nursing programs (Texas BON 217.1). Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
- Experience 1 year of RN experience. Specialty areas may have increased experience requirements as dictated by unit or standard of care
- Licenses and Certifications (NLC) NURSING LICENSURE COMPACT-BNE current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license, and (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
- Education Bachelor's Degree BSN
- Licenses and Certifications Professional Certification in a Nursing Organization
- Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. All assessments take into consideration age specific criteria (children, adolescents, adults and older adults).
- Actively anticipates patients and/or patients' family needs and expectations and utilizes these in conjunction with the assessment to develop an appropriate plan of care for the patient. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care. Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation.
