Job Summary

The Pediatric Advanced Care Provider (APP) will work with a multidisciplinary team within the UT Southwestern Pediatric Critical Care/Cardiology division at Children’s Hospital in Dallas to provide comprehensive care to pediatric patients on our inpatient pediatric cardiac intensive care unit. These patients present with a wide variety of congenital and acquired heart disease. This position requires a high degree of critical thinking and clinical expertise in working with pediatric patients in the cardiac intensive care unit.

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, consultation, and health promotion and care coordination for patients and their families.


* New Grad Rate $143,325*

Scheduled Hours (24/7): variable 12‑shift including weekends

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in nursing or higher with documentation of completion of accredited Advanced Practice Education Program and graduate education, and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization consistent with the clinical practice area and patient population.
  • Master’s degree graduate of a Master’s or higher accreditation (ARC‑PA) accredited Physician Assistant program.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Advanced Practice RN (CPNP‑AC) by Texas State Board of Nursing upon hire and authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing upon hire.
  • National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and certified licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board (PA‑C) upon hire.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified by the American Heart Association or Red Cross based on the UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers upon hire.
Preferred Experience
  • One year of pediatric cardiology inpatient experience with heart failure, pre‑ and post‑heart transplant, and with ventricular assist devices.
  • Experience with peripheral intravenous lines (PIV), removal of chest tubes, pacing wires, sutures, and arterial blood gas draws.
  • New graduates with previous pediatric cardiac or ICU experience may be considered.
Job Duties
  • Diagnoses and treats critically ill patients, develops and manages treatment plans, and performs advanced procedures.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans for patients.
  • Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
