JOB SUMMARY
The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) at UT Southwestern is one of the world’s premier neurological diagnostic and treatment centers. This role works collaboratively with the NSICU team to provide specialized nursing care for critically ill neuroscience patients.
The NSICU specializes in neurosurgical procedures, neurologic medical conditions, and comprehensive stroke care, with a patient population that is approximately 70% surgical, with specialties in tumor, neurovascular, and spine surgeries. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center for North Texas, it provides specialized care for acute strokes requiring neurological monitoring, mechanical thrombectomy, or surgical decompression.
Ideal candidates will have recent Neuro ICU experience and a passion for caring for high-acuity neuroscience patients, including stroke, neuro-trauma, and post-neurosurgical populations.

- BSN preferred
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience in an ICU setting required
- 3+ years of Neuro ICU (NSICU) experience strongly preferred
- Current RN license in the State of Texas or eligibility through the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) through the AHA or ARC
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
JOB DUTIES
- Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. All assessments take into consideration age specific criteria (children, adolescents, adults and older adults).
- Actively anticipates patients and/or patient's family needs and expectations and utilizes these in conjunction with the assessment to develop an appropriate plan of care for the patient. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care. Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation.
- Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on the completed assessment. Completes accurate and timely documentation of these interventions.
