Overview

Research Analytical Chemist, Human Nutrition – position number 958293. Works with minimal direction to plan and carry out complex research projects, develop, improve, and standardize advanced analytical methods. Responsible for the engineering and technical operations of the organization, including scientific research, laboratory testing using instrumental techniques, and high-level troubleshooting of mass spectrometers and HPLCs.

The candidate oversees, plans, and schedules detailed phases of one or more parts of research projects; provides analytical chemistry expertise in laboratory measurements, data collection, and analysis using chromatography and mass spectrometry; selects analytical methods and adapts or develops methods to meet research goals; and records observations and measurements.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees, plans and schedules detailed phases of one or more parts of research projects, or entire research project. Provides analytical chemistry expertise in laboratory measurements, data collection, and analysis using chromatography and mass spectrometry.
  • Selects and determines correct analytical methods in approach to research investigation and in design of investigational goals. Adapts or develops methods to meet research goals.
  • Supervises or conducts recording of observations and measurements. Compiles and collates resulting experimental data.
  • Oversees the preparation of figures, tables, and descriptions of data and experiments for grant and manuscript submissions and for poster or oral presentations.
  • Determines additional equipment required for research projects and ensures compatibility with existing equipment.
  • Develops and applies advanced instrumentation and methods to investigate the chemical and elemental composition of complex materials.
  • Collaborates with PIs to develop resolutions to complex issues and provides recommendations for improvements in chemical and elemental measurements.
  • Sets up and operates HPLC, GC, and MS instruments and other equipment used for sample extraction and preparation.
  • Participates in the development, research, and/or design of new types of proposed improvements in chemical analysis while conforming to mandatory requirements.
  • Assists in guiding documentation, technology utilization and automation; analyzes impact of mission changes on design or engineering concepts of assigned programs.
  • Performs complex electrical, gas, and plumbing operations on mass spectrometers and HPLCs.
  • Interacts with instrument companies to diagnose and solve complex instrument problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education
    PhD with proven experience in mass spectrometry-based small molecule analysis OR graduate/postgraduate work in mass spectrometry OR Master’s Degree OR Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience
    1 year experience as an OEM field service engineer, team leader in a contract research laboratory, or research scientist in a pharmaceutical or biotech company; or 3 years of extensive instrument and laboratory experience with a Master’s degree; or 5 years with a Bachelor’s degree.
