JOB SUMMARY

Plans, coordinates, directs, and participates in work of smaller research project or major unit of large research project in field of specialization for which incumbent is particularly qualified in terms of extensive training and/or experience.

The Vascular-Immunology Laboratory of Laurel Y. Lee, MD, DPhil in the Division of Cardiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join our expanding basic and translational research program. Working within a world-class academic environment, the Research Scientist will assist with planning and executing bench research and mouse work aimed at understanding the mechanisms underlying immune-mediated vascular disorders and identifying novel therapeutic targets.

The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise and experience in both bench-based molecular and cell biology techniques and mouse experiments. This position will also be responsible for managing laboratory operations and training and mentoring students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior laboratory personnel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Under the principal investigator’s direction, plan, execute, and troubleshoot complex in vitro and in vivo experiments.
  • Experimental approaches will include but not limited to mammalian cell culture; mouse cardiac perfusion and vascular tissue harvest; molecular biology (RNA/DNA extraction, PCR, QPCR, western blot, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, transfection and sequencing); flow cytometry; histology; advanced imaging analysis and quantification; metabolomics analysis
  • Analyze and interpret data using statistical methods and prepare data figures/tables and written summaries for the principal investigator’s review while maintaining accurate and timely laboratory notebooks and research records on a daily basis.
  • Manage mouse colony with breeding and genotyping and perform mouse treatments and/or surgery as part of in vivo experiments
  • Manage lab operations with the responsibilities including but not limited to maintaining well-organized lab supply inventories, reagent ordering, equipment maintenance, and maintaining and updating the lab safety protocols and animal protocols while maintaining a clean and functional workspace and a respectful and inclusive environment.
  • Assist with selecting, training and supervising junior lab personnel, including students, technicians, and postdoctoral fellows as directed by the principal investigator
  • Develop and maintain standard operating protocols for experiments for the lab

Perform other duties as assigned by the principal investigator

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in biomedical sciences, molecular biology, immunology, cardiovascular biology, or a closely related field
