Position Summary
The Test Truck Crew Leader is responsible for leading a field crew that performs dielectric testing on utility fleet trucks and equipment, along with inspection and replacement of required PPE. This role involves extensive travel, working out of town Monday–Thursday and occasional Fridays, supporting utility power operations across multiple sites. The Crew Leader ensures that all testing activities meet safety, compliance, and industry standards while operating specialized test trucks.
EssentialFunctions Field Leadership & Coordination
- Lead and supervise a crew conducting dielectric testing and PPE replacement on utility fleet assets.
- Coordinate daily work plans, jobsite setups, and efficient workflow.
- Provide on‑site instruction, oversight, and performance guidance to crew members.
- Serve as the primary contact between field operations and fleet/maintenance leadership.
- Operate dielectric test trucks and related testing equipment in accordance with industry and manufacturer standards.
- Perform tests on aerial lifts, bucket trucks, digger derricks, and insulated tools.
- Document test results, ensure compliance with utility safety requirements, and identify equipment that fails testing.
- Inspect, replace, and verify compliance of PPE, including hot sticks, gloves, sleeves, and other insulated tools.
- Uphold and enforce strict safety protocols consistent with utility power industry standards.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company policies at all times.
- Conduct jobsite safety assessments, tailboards, hazard identification, and proper lockout/tagout procedures.
- Promote a safety‑first culture through continuous crew coaching and safe work practices.
- Drive and operate CDL‑required test trucks, following DOT regulations.
- Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and coordinate needed maintenance.
- Maintain test equipment calibration, tools, and test materials.
- Assist in loading/unloading equipment and perform tasks requiring heavy lifting.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working conditions.
- Work safely while performing dielectric tests and changing out PPE in the field.
- Work safely while testing PPE in house.
- Perform all other related work as required to complete the job.
- Complete dielectric test reports, certificates, and PPE compliance records.
- Enter data into fleet management or utility compliance systems.
- Communicate findings and recommendations to fleet managers or utility supervisors.
- Position is out of town Monday–Thursday, with overnight stays required.
- Occasional Friday work depending on project schedules or utility needs.
- Ability to travel regionally for extended periods if necessary.
- Must have a CDL (Class
A) license. - Experience in the utility power industry, fleet testing, or related field work.
- Strong understanding of dielectric testing procedures or willingness to be trained to proficiency.
- Proven leadership experience (crew lead, foreman, or similar).
- Ability to move heavy equipment and lift an excess of 50 lbs.
- Excellent safety record and commitment to safe work practices.
- Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
- Willing to work overtime when requested.
- Able to work for extended periods of time in various locations, when required.
- Must have basic knowledge of materials used in fleet transportation.
- Understands proper use of company radio.
- Understands operation of heavy equipment.
- Understands the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
- Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
- Able to climb up on the trucks.
- Prior experience with dielectric testing, insulated tool testing, or aerial device inspections.
- Familiarity with utility fleet vehicles such as bucket trucks, digger derricks, and service trucks.
