Job Overview
Under general supervision of Fleet Service Supervisor, trains or performs maintenance and repair on a wide variety of complex gasoline, diesel, electric, electric powered hybrid, compressed natural gas, and multi-fuel heavy equipment. Work may be assigned or monitored by Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
Under general supervision of Fleet Service Supervisor, trains or performs maintenance and repair on a wide variety of complex gasoline, diesel, electric, electric powered hybrid, compressed natural gas, and multi-fuel heavy equipment. What You Will Be Doing- Performs preventive maintenance and inspections as required on heavy equipment. Conducts visual, auditory, and operational inspection of vehicles and equipment to identify and troubleshoot problems for repair; identifies problem causes; researches problems via repair manuals, schematics, OEM's, service bulletins and other mechanics as needed.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical, fuel, ignition, emission, exhaust systems, power take offs, vehicle air conditioning systems, hydraulic, fluid pumping, and pneumatic systems; replace parts, tunes, programs, and makes adjustments using test equipment and technical manuals. Inspects and replaces or repairs air and hydraulic brake systems on vehicles and equipment.
- Removes, disassembles, rebuilds, repairs, assembles, and installs components such as transmissions, engines, drive shafts, U-joints, differentials, hydraulic control units, pumps, seals, hoses, clutches, and brakes on heavy equipment using hoists and other tools.
- Uses specialized diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and repair problems in complex integrated electronic systems such as computer control modules, multiplex networks, sensors, actuators, servos, circuit cards, and solid-state relays.
- Modifies parts to fit or improvises modifications to equipment to correct recurring malfunctions and uses welding equipment to repair or fabricate items for heavy equipment.
- Performs minor body repair and corrosion control, refinishes, and repaints surfaces as required.
- When assigned to Heavy Equipment positions, diagnoses, and repairs medium and heavy-duty trucks, shuttle busses, generators, sweepers, and construction equipment.
- When assigned to Aircraft/Fire/Rescue equipment, diagnoses, and repair high-pressure plumbing and pumps, foam induction and powder firefighting and hydraulic systems.
- When assigned to Winter Weather Equipment positions, diagnoses, and repairs airport snow removal equipment such as snowplows, snow brooms, snow blowers and multifunction equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent
- Two (2) years plus of experience in a general automotive, heavy equipment, and/or fleet service position.
- Ability to pass a medical physical examination.
- Ability to obtain an EPA 609 Refrigerant certification within 90 days of employment in this position.
- Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above on a year-for-year basis.
- Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license.
- Incumbent must possess a set of mechanic's tools to perform skilled work.
Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in repair of heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with servicing vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge in the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of heavy-duty systems and assemblies.
- Skill in diagnosing and repairing a variety of types of automotive equipment – including small vehicles, medium and large size trucks, and bus equipment.
- Skill in repair/overhaul of powertrains (gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels) engine, transmissions, and differentials.
- Skill in repair/replacement of components such as starters, generators/alternators, carburetors fuel pumps.
- Ability to test and diagnose malfunctioning equipment and systems.
- Ability to operate automotive machine shop equipment such as lathe, hydraulic press, gas and electric welding apparatus, drill press and related equipment.
