Position Overview
As a Software Engineering Manager within PNC's Lending Technology organization, you will be based in Pittsburgh, PA or Dallas, TX. This role is a hands‑on technical and leadership position that requires a blend of engineering expertise and people management.
Responsibilities- Technical Leadership (Primary Focus): Serve as a hands‑on technical leader—designing, coding, reviewing, and troubleshooting software solutions. Lead the architecture and development of Java‑based microservices using Spring Boot and modern API‑driven patterns. Drive technical standards, best practices, and code quality across the team. Partner with architects and platform teams to design scalable, resilient, and secure systems. Participate directly in critical technical discussions, design reviews, and complex problem solving.
- People & Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of 10–15 software engineers, supporting performance, growth, and career development. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Support hiring, onboarding, and workforce planning in alignment with technology and business needs. Provide clear direction, coaching, and feedback while empowering engineers to deliver high‑quality solutions.
- Communication & Technical Influence: Collaborate effectively with product managers, designers, QA, Dev Ops, and other engineers. Clearly communicate technical designs, risks, and trade‑offs to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders. Participate actively in sprint planning, estimation, and delivery commitments. Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and guidance. Act as a role model for engineering best practices and professional behavior.
- Operational Leadership: Manage development projects, teams and application support functions. Oversee multiple application programming and analysis projects, including development, installation and maintenance. Monitor and maintain adherence to quality standards and compliance on an ongoing basis. Maximize staff contribution through professional growth and development to meet business needs and improve teamwork.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, experience and certification.
- 5+ years of industry‑relevant experience in software development.
- At least 3 years of management experience.
- Proficiency in Java (Spring Boot) and experience with microservices architecture.
- Strong experience leading engineering teams, coaching, and performance management.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to influence cross‑functional stakeholders.
- Experience with agile development, release management, and continuous integration / delivery.
- Knowledge of secure, scalable design principles and best practices.
