Job Objective:

The Sr Lab Technician is a mid-level contributor that works to help solve problems of expanded complexity and scope. The primary purpose of this position is to support manufacturing by conducting laboratory testing and ensuring product quality and consistency through accurate sampling, testing, and communication with product development, R&D, and production.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Retrieve representative samples of for testing and retain records
  • Ability to perform all methods and procedures under the Physical Lab Technician I scope
  • Perform various tests on samples, including DSC, ICP, GC-MS, ash, melt flow, flex modulus, and other analytical testing procedures
  • Compile and analyze testing data, preparing graphs, charts, and reports for appropriate personnel
  • Coordinate testing for project submissions from the different departments
  • Conduct more complex testing, analysis, and coordinate with physical lab technicians to complete project work
  • Compare and contrast samples to provide understanding of competitive positioning or root cause for a problem.
  • Manage reworks, reprocesses, and potential off-quality from sample submissions
  • Ensure laboratory samples represent the manufacturing process and can be reproduced on a production scale
  • Perform wet chemistry, mix standards, create dilutions for calibrations and analysis
  • Retrieve, verify, and retain certificates of analysis for purchased material standards.
  • Attend any job-related training deemed necessary by supervision
  • Follow all established standard operating and safety procedures as well as company policies
  • Perform general housekeeping duties as necessary
  • Actively participate in group activities and collaborates with team.
  • Provide basic analysis and apply knowledge from experience or standard procedure to solve problems.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Required Experience and

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • 0-2 years’ relevant experience as a Physical Lab Technician I OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May be required to use department specific database systems
  • Working knowledge of various raw materials involved including their unique physical properties, both as individual components and when utilized in a collective recipe
  • Familiarity with DSC equipment, melt flow equipment, ashing oven, injection-molding equipment, equipment to test flex modulus, and equipment to test tensile strength (Tinius Olsen)
  • Knowledge of colors and chemicals, sufficient knowledge to test products and communicate to other employees about this information
  • Basic Excel knowledge including logging inventory information into Excel sheets, using conversion formulas, and sharing data to necessary groups
  • Knowledge in running programs, software, and systems such as AS400, spectrographs, JD Edwards System/Cardex Program
  • Applies conceptual knowledge of the theories, practices, and procedures within a discipline.
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • High level of integrity and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential data.
  • Compile and interpret data, create, and manipulate spreadsheets, and communicate results to other personnel affected
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous conditions caused by noise, moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, and other conditions associated with a Laboratory Environment.
  • Bending, crouching, and stooping may be required.
