Recreation Equipment Operator

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to operate a variety of maintenance equipment necessary for the accomplishment of various infrastructure maintenance and repair projects for the Recreation & Parks Departments.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Operates a variety of light equipment, machinery, and tools as necessary to support essential functions, which may include Turf Mowers (both push and ride), Wood Chipper, High Pressure Pipe Jetter, Skid Steer, Motorized Broom.
• Assist with a variety of tasks in road and right-of-way maintenance; maintains rights-of-way by mowing and edging grass, trimming trees and shrubbery, chipping work, planting seed, and fertilizing.
• Inspectsequipmentpriortousetoensurethatitisinproperoperatingcondition;checks brakes,mirrors, lights, air pressure, etc.
• Performsequipmentmaintenancedutiessuchaslubricating,greasing,andcheckingbelts,hoses,air pressure, oil, gas and other fluids.
• Cleansandmakesminoradjustmentsandrepairstoequipment.
• Cleans shop or work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
• Mowsgrassoncountyrights-of-way and all park facilities.
• Clearsandchipsbrush;removesoverhangingtreelimbs.
• Delivers supplies,equipment,andpersonneltoandfromworksites.
• Assistswithsnowremovaloperations.
• Collectslitterfromright-of-way and all County park facilities.
• Operatesavarietyofhandandpowertools.
• Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure the safety of other employees and the public.
• Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
• Performsrelatedduties.

• Skill in operating equipment such as a tractor, mower, backhoe, dump truck, jack hammer, and other related hand-held tools and construction equipment.

• Skillindefensivedrivingtechniques.

The Parks and Recreation Department Head and/or Maintenance Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor checks (including spot-checks) completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

High school diploma or GED; one year of experience in equipment operation in the construction and maintenance of roads; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
