Summary/Goal of Position:
The Strong Start Family Literacy Instructors will collaboratively deliver a seven-week intergenerational summer program designed to support incoming kindergarten students and their parents/guardians. The program integrates early childhood education, adult English as a second language (ESL) instruction, parent education, and parent and child together (PACT) activities to strengthen school readiness, build parent capacity, and foster meaningful homeschool connections aligned with Danbury Public Schools.
Each instructor will lead their respective instructional component while working as part of a coordinated instructional team to support whole-family learning.
Essential Tasks of the Position (Illustrative not inclusive:
* Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction aligned to assigned role (early childhood, adult ESL, or parent education)
* Collaborate with instructional team to design and implement integrated family literacy experiences, including joint parent child activities
* Support a welcoming, inclusive classroom environment that reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity of participating families
* For early childhood instructor: implement play-based, literacy-rich instruction to build foundational skills for kindergarten readiness
* For adult ESL instructor: deliver standards-based English language instruction focused on English language proficiency standards (ELPS), practical communication, and school partnership and engagement
* For parent education instructor: facilitate learning on parenting strategies, school systems, and supporting children's academic success
* Monitor student and family participation and progress; maintain accurate attendance and required documentation
* Assume case management responsibilities for ? of adult students to support retention and engagement
* Communicate effectively with families to encourage consistent participation and engagement
* Participate in program planning, coordination meetings, and reflection to improve program implementation
* Ensure compliance with all WERACE, district, state, and federal guidelines related to instruction and student records
* Perform other duties as assigned by program leadership
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Knowledge of family literacy models and intergenerational learning approaches
* Understanding of adult learners and/or early childhood development, depending on role
* Ability to deliver differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needs
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly with multilingual learners and families
* Ability to foster a supportive, respectful, and engaging learning environment
* Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices
* Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Basic technology skills for instructional delivery and record-keeping
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required;
Master's degree preferred in education or related field
Appropriate certification or experience aligned to position:
* Early childhood instructor: background in early childhood or elementary education required; at least one of the following certifications:
* (112)- Integrated early childhood/special education, birth-kindergarten AND/OR
* (305)- Elementary, PK-6 AND/OR
* (512)- Montessori, primary, birth to kindergarten AND/OR
* (102)-Remedial reading and remedial language arts, 1-12 AND/OR
* (111)- Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), pk-12
* Adult ESL Instructor: background in adult education language acquisition and one of the following certifications:
* (111)- Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), pk-12 AND/OR
* (088)- Non-English speaking adults
* Parent Education Instructor: background in early or elementary education, counseling, social work, or related field preferred; experience working with adult learners, young children, or family engagement programs preferred; one of the following certifications:
