Western Connecticut State University Access Ability Services Learning Specialist University Assistant Part-time Position

Western Connecticut State University is pleased to announce applications are being accepted for a part-time 11.75 hours per week Learning Specialist University Assistant in the Office of Access Ability Services. Access Ability Services coordinates and provides accommodations and support services to over 400 undergraduate and graduate students with documented disabilities.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provides front office coverage, including answering phones, greeting students and visitors, and directing inquiries appropriately.
  • Monitors and responds to office email communications in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assists students, faculty, and visitors with general questions regarding Access Ability Services processes and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate and timely case notes documenting student interactions in the office's online database.
  • Assists in the hiring, supervision and training of student employees.
  • Provides training and oversees work assignments for undergraduate student employees involved in the provision of exam and assistive technology accommodations.
  • Serve as an exam proctor in our accommodated exam rooms.
  • Develop and present academic workshops to promote student academic skills.
  • Develop academic strategies/handouts to support the transition of incoming students.
  • Support Beyond All Odds, a student organization for students with and without disabilities that promotes disability inclusion on campus.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in the area of Education, Educational Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Special Education, or closely related field.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in an educational setting.
  • Experience with students in a higher education setting highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of academic learning strategies such as time management, organization, and study preparation.
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent organizational and attention to detail skills.
  • Experience providing direct services to individuals with disabilities in a postsecondary disability services office is preferred.

Work Hours,

Salary & Benefits:

11.75 hours per week for 35 weeks (August – May). Hourly rate is $25.00 per hour. Additional information on part-time benefits can be found u.edu/hr/benefits/. Please note there are no paid benefits for this position. All employment, if offered, is contingent upon proof of citizenship or employability under the requirement of the Immigration and Control Act (IRCA) and the successful passing of a background check.
