Position Summary

The Danbury Public Schools is seeking a passionate and student-centered 6th Grade Humanities Teacher to inspire and support middle school learners in English Language Arts and Social Studies. The successful candidate will create an engaging, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom where students develop strong literacy, communication, critical thinking, and inquiry skills. The ideal candidate collaborates effectively with colleagues, builds meaningful relationships with students and families, and is committed to meeting the diverse academic and social-emotional needs of all learners.

Responsibilities
  • Implement the district-approved curriculum in English Language Arts and Social Studies in accordance with the Danbury Board of Education's scope and sequence.
  • Create and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and achievement.
  • Establish and reinforce clear classroom expectations, routines, and procedures.
  • Develop and deliver standards-based lessons that incorporate differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Foster students' reading, writing, speaking, listening, research, and critical thinking skills through engaging instructional practices.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and technology to support student learning.
  • Design and implement formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and inform instruction.
  • Analyze student performance data to identify areas for intervention, enrichment, and instructional improvement.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, and attendance as required.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress through conferences, report cards, interim reports, and other means.
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams, special education staff, interventionists, and other educators to support student success.
  • Participate actively in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, and ongoing professional development.
  • Assist in the selection and implementation of instructional materials and resources.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and a commitment to continuous growth.
  • Support school-wide initiatives and contribute positively to the school community.
Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of best instructional practices for upper elementary and middle school learners. Strong understanding of literacy instruction, reading comprehension, writing development, and social studies content. Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the academic, linguistic, and social-emotional needs of a diverse student population. Experience creating culturally responsive and student-centered learning environments. Excellent classroom management and organizational skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, families, and administrators. Experience integrating educational technology into classroom instruction. Prior teaching experience preferred.

Qualifications

Active Connecticut State Department of Education Elementary Certification (305) (Grades K-6) required. Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field required;
Master's degree preferred. Demonstrated success working with diverse student populations. Knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies for literacy and social studies. Ability to plan, organize, and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction.
