Job

  • Location:

Danbury High School – West Campus
Purpose

The Academy of Professional & Public Service at Danbury High School was designed to foster academic success, personal growth and social development of high school students who demonstrate an interest in public service and leadership. Within this Academy, the District offers a pathway specifically dedicated to those students interested in Education and Human Development. These students are able to explore the world of early childhood learning through our Little Hatters program, where academic learning is directed by a teacher certified in Family and Consumer Science.

These students can then engage in hands on learning through our early childhood caregiving program located within Danbury High School West. We are currently seeking a Para educator Assistant Teacher to support both the high school students participating in the program and the young learners who participate in this early learning program.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supports high school students individually or in small groups, working under the supervision of certified teachers in the Little Hatters Early Learning classroom, helping to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher and to assist students as needed.
  • Assists the teacher in daily routines for preschool learners attending the Little Hatters program, including greeting parents during drop-off and pick-up; helping students with getting settled into the class (e.g., taking off coats, putting on name tags, etc.); toileting or helping with class supervision; supervising outdoor playtime if provided; preparing students to exit classroom to caregivers at the end of the school day.
  • Assists the Para educator Head Teacher in the handling, operation and care of equipment used in the classroom, including media and technology.
  • Supports high school students in interactions with preschoolers that form the basis for their participation in this early learning program.
  • Assists with the supervision of all students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, and in other non‑classroom activities.
  • Distributes and collects art materials, workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction as needed.
  • Assists in providing a well‑organized, smoothly functioning early learning school environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • High School diploma is required.
  • Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to work productively with children. Experience or academic credits related to early childhood learning a plus.
  • Exhibits a clear understanding of techniques and strategies for working with preschool aged students.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions effectively.
  • Must exhibit good judgment, patience, tact and courtesy.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of, at a minimum, the essential functions of the position.
  • Exhibits proficiency in basic reading, math, writing, and speaking English.
  • Utilizes and maintains ethical practices for confidential communication about students.
  • Demonstrated experience/training in working with young children required.
