Zachry Nuclear Engineering (ZNE) is seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer III to join our growing engineering team in Stonington, CT, Perry, OH, or Charlotte, NC.

At Zachry Nuclear Engineering, our teams support some of the nation's most critical energy infrastructure through engineering design, plant modernization initiatives, system modifications, and technical consulting services supporting the commercial nuclear power industry.

As a Mechanical Engineer III, you'll contribute directly to engineering projects that improve plant safety, reliability, and performance while working alongside experienced engineering professionals across multiple disciplines. This role provides opportunities to take ownership of engineering assignments, collaborate with clients, and support meaningful work that impacts the future of clean, reliable energy.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer III independently performs engineering and design activities supporting commercial nuclear power plants and related facilities.

The successful candidate will apply established engineering principles and professional judgment to evaluate plant conditions, develop engineering solutions, perform technical analyses, and support design modifications that improve safety, reliability, operability, and performance.

This position offers increasing responsibility and project ownership while providing opportunities to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and utility clients on a variety of engineering challenges.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities Engineering Design & Analysis
  • Perform engineering calculations, analyses, and evaluations related to nuclear plant mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Develop engineering solutions supporting plant modifications, upgrades, and improvement projects.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, design documents, specifications, reports, and technical evaluations.
  • Apply engineering principles, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements in the development of engineering products.
  • Support feasibility studies and engineering assessments related to plant systems and equipment.
Plant Systems Evaluation
  • Evaluate plant equipment and system performance.
  • Investigate equipment reliability concerns and operational issues.
  • Develop solutions to improve plant safety, reliability, efficiency, and performance.
  • Support system modifications and capital improvement projects.
Project Execution
  • Plan and coordinate assigned engineering activities.
  • Manage assigned tasks and deliverables to meet project schedules and budgets.
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high-quality engineering products.
  • Support engineering reviews, project planning activities, and technical meetings.
Client & Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to project stakeholders.
  • Support presentation of engineering products to client review boards and technical review committees.
Nuclear Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company procedures.
  • Support quality assurance and quality control activities.
  • Maintain awareness of applicable nuclear industry codes, standards, and best practices.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
Experience
  • Minimum four (4) years of relevant engineering experience with an active Professional Engineer (PE) license; or
  • Minimum six (6) years of relevant engineering experience without a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience supporting engineering design, analysis, modifications, or evaluations in industrial, energy, or nuclear environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform engineering work with increasing levels of independence and responsibility.
Technical Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and technical analyses.
  • Familiarity with engineering codes, standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of plant systems, equipment, and engineering processes.
Professional Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Software Skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with engineering software and technical analysis tools.
  • Mathcad experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications Industry Experience
  • Commercial nuclear power experience.
  • Experience supporting plant modifications, power uprates, equipment replacements, or modernization projects.
