Job Description
Experienced subject matter expert level Echocardiographer. Under the supervision of a physician, performs echocardiograms on fetal and pediatric patients, including routine, emergent, and complex congenital studies, as requested by the physician and in accordance with standard practices.
Procedures include fetal, pediatric, neonatal, adult congenital, transthoracic, and transesophageal echocardiograms. Patient population includes fetal, pediatric, and adult.
Provides training and oversight to pediatric echocardiographers in the areas of pediatric and fetal echocardiography. Operates and maintains equipment necessary to perform all required procedures and to obtain optimal diagnostic recordings.
Responsibilities- Under supervision of a physician, performs echocardiograms on fetal patients including routine and emergency fetal studies.
- Under supervision, performs echocardiograms on pediatric patients and provides training to echocardiographers in pediatric and fetal echocardiography.
- Performs routine and emergent complex congenital studies; utilizes independent judgment and systematic problem‑solving to produce high‑quality diagnostic information.
- Acquires and analyzes data using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies, and provides a summary of findings to the physician to aid in diagnosis and management. Completes all documentation.
- Inputs preliminary reports and required measurements into PACS and utilizes Epic for billing information.
- Educates patient and family/caregiver regarding the examination and expectations; assists with gowning and positioning; applies EKG stickers during the exam.
- Gathers patient identifiers at the start of the visit and reviews the patient’s medical record for history of symptoms and necessary information for the diagnostic procedure.
- Prepares patient records for review and interpretation by the physician, including selection, recording, and cross‑reference of significant studies. Provides accurate documentation of patient care on appropriate forms, according to Connecticut Children’s and department protocols.
- Maintains equipment in working order, performs minor adjustments and preventive maintenance, and reports malfunctions to the department manager.
- Maintains a clean exam environment; prepares the area, restocks supplies, burns and mails external study discs, forwards finalized echo reads via fax, and tracks billing sheets for outside studies.
- May provide echocardiograms at outside locations such as healthcare systems outside of Connecticut Children’s as assigned; may transport patients as necessary.
- Performs any other job‑related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited cardiac ultrasound program that includes clinical and didactic education in pediatric echocardiography.
- Minimum of 6 months experience in fetal echocardiography and a minimum of 2 years experience in pediatric echocardiography; OR
- Completion of internal fetal training program through Connecticut Children’s with minimum of 2 years experience in pediatric echocardiography.
- Registered with ARDMS or CCI in Echocardiography (CCI) RDCS (AE) or RCS.
- Registered with ARDMS or CCI in Pediatric Echocardiography RDCS(PE) or RCCS.
- Registered with ARDMS in Fetal Echocardiography as RDCS (FE).
- Current Basic Life Support certification (BLS) in accordance with American Heart Association standards.

Knowledge
- Structure and function of the cardiovascular system, including simple and complex congenital heart abnormalities.
- Cardiovascular principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment involved in the performance of all above services.
Skills
- Demonstrated skills in ultrasound physics and instrumentation, pathophysiology of pediatric cardiovascular disease, therapeutic measures, two‑dimensional and M‑mode echocardiography, cardiac Doppler.
Abilities
- Perform all echocardiograms and cardiac ultrasound procedures.
- Accurately and clearly document the echo procedure and results.
