Job Scope: To provide educational interpreting and transliteration for deaf/hard-of-hearing students and their peers, teachers, staff and administrative personnel in the educational setting.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interprets/transliterates all auditory information presented so students who are deaf or hard of hearing may participate in classroom and extracurricular activities.
- Performs voice interpreting/transliterating by verbalizing messages from students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Provides appropriate and accurate language modeling for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Facilitates communication for all participants in a wide variety of settings.
- Collaborates with school staff on environmental or programmatic accommodations and modifications.
- Works as a part of the instructional team with general and special education teachers, support service providers, itinerant or resource teacher, and administrators.
- Meets with classroom teachers and others to discuss issues related to the communication needs of the student, IEP goals and other program issues on a regular basis.
- Prepares for interpreting/transliterating assignments by reviewing content area textbooks, student's materials, lesson plans, outlines and other resources provided by the teacher(s).
- Upholds the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and the EIPA Guidelines of Professional Conduct for Educational Interpreters emphasizing the required confidentiality of student information.
- Performs other related duties as required, i.e., tutoring, under the direction of a teacher.
- Continues professional development by attending interpreting workshops, involvement in the Deaf community and professional organizations.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:
Has the knowledge and possesses the ability to provide manual and oral transliteration and interpretation in the educational setting.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree in Sign-Language Interpretation/Transliteration or equivalent.
- National certification from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
- Associate's Degree in Sign Language Interpretation/Transliteration.
- Education Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) 3.5 or higher
- Continuing education to meet the preferred qualifications such as Sign Language Interpreting workshops and/or college credit hours.
- 184 day work year (184 student days and 4 professional development day)
- $31,000 annual salary with benefits; non-union
