Position Highlights- Full-time, 40 hours per week.

Danbury Rest Area. - A valid driver's license and pre-physical examination are required.
- Candidate pool may be used to fill future vacancies at other Rest Area facilities.
- Weekend coverage is mandatory. Shift examples below.

The Department of Transportation Rest Area Attendants can expect to perform the following:
- Grass cutting, trimming, shrub bed maintenance, hedge row trimming, litter pickup, snow and ice removal.
- Continuous cleaning within the confines of the rest area grounds and buildings.
- Related duties.

- Provide a neat and clean facility at all times.
- Assist the traveling public, service people and/or vendors as required.
- Replace light bulbs (building), unplug toilets, and perform other minor maintenance items.
- Report any and all surface water leaks or plumbing malfunctions immediately.
- Prepare daily, weekly and monthly reports for the facilities, including water, heating fuel, propane fuel, generator and fire extinguishers.
- Monitor and report on the status of all usable commodities needing replacement to avoid running out.
- Perform required seasonal work such as keeping walkways and stairwells clean and free of snow and ice.
- Gather and remove leaves.
- Perform spring cleanup, including removal of debris from trees during winter months.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Knowledge of physical properties of standard maintenance materials, mechanical principles, basic practices of the maintenance trade.
- Considerable interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to use hand and power tools, make minor repairs to simpler mechanical equipment, operate equipment listed on the attached addendum, understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Any experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in maintenance trade practices, using maintenance materials, and applying mechanical principles.
- Experience working with a diverse group of individuals in a customer service setting.
- Experience communicating in person, over the phone, and in writing with a variety of constituents.
- Experience operating maintenance-related equipment, including snow blowers, push mowers, walk behind zero‑turn mowers, weed whackers.
- May be required to possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and other required licensing.
- Must be able to train new employees and relief employees to perform duties and responsibilities.
- Must be in uniform on site at all times during the shift.
- Must have adequate physical strength, stamina, and agility; visual and auditory acuity; maintain fitness to perform duties.
- Physical examination required.
Incumbents are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, occasional lifting of heavy weights, frequent lifting of moderate weights, highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, poison ivy, insect bites, and allergy irritants during summer months, and loud machinery.
