WCSU is seeking a full‑time Qualified Craft Worker (Carpentry) to join our Environmental & Facilities Maintenance Trades Department in Danbury, Connecticut.

POSITIONS REQUIRMENTS:
  • Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week
  • First Shift
  • Work Shift:

    Monday
    - Friday, 7:00am - 3:00pm
  • This position reports directly to the Building Maintenance Supervisor
  • A medical exam, drug screen, and criminal background check will be required prior to offer of employment.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Environmental & Facilities Maintenance Trades Department is responsible for providing trades services for both campuses of the University and for the full range of skilled trades functions (plumbing, carpentry, electrical and/or painting), including the operation of equipment to fulfill job function.

The Qualified Craft Worker
- Carpentry role at Western Connecticut State University includes a wide range of tasks to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the campus facilities. The candidate selected for this position will be tasked with a variety of skilled trades duties across both campuses. This position's role is integral to the university's commitment to providing a safe and functional academic environment.

Candidates must be prepared to work in various conditions.

Selection Plan

In order to be considered for this job opening you must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months of full‑time service or full‑time equivalent service, absent any applicable collective bargaining language, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening. Purpose

of Job Class (Nature of Work)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the carpentry trade area.

Examples of Duties
  • Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard carpentry trade practices and codes;
  • Performs alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities;
  • Performs skilled bench work, operating with such equipment as power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines;
  • Builds and repairs cabinets;
  • Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools;
  • Lays resilient flooring and Formica;
  • Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;
  • Keeps necessary records;
  • In smaller trade areas may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area;
  • May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required;
  • May cut glass and glaze windows;
  • May fabricate signs;
  • May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;
  • May operate heavy equipment;
  • May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports;
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard carpentry trade practices;

Minimum Qualifications
- General Experience

Four (4) years of experience in the carpentry trade.

Minimum Qualifications
- Special Experience

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled carpentry trades.

NOTE:

For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.
