Position: Correctional Treatment Specialist (Case Manager)

Corrections professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements
  • Degree: completed at least 24 semester hours of coursework in the behavioral or social sciences.
  • Combination of education and experience: completed at least 24 semester hours of coursework in the behavioral or social sciences and provided applicants with knowledge of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a 4‑year degree.
Evaluation of Education
  • Courses such as sociology, correctional administration, criminal justice, government/political science, psychology, social work, counseling, and other related social or behavioral science courses may satisfy the 24‑semester‑hour requirement.
Evaluation of Experience
  • Experience in casework in a correctional institution or in another criminal‑justice setting.
  • Experience in counseling in any setting that required diagnostic or treatment‑planning skills to achieve specific social or occupational goals.
  • Experience working with persons in need of social rehabilitation.

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants must have the following:

Education Qualifications
  • GL‑09:
    Two years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or equivalent.
  • GS‑11:
    Three years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent.
  • Graduate education must have been in corrections or a related field such as criminal justice, sociology, psychology, counseling, social work, or other coursework related to the position.
Experience Qualifications (GL‑09 and GS‑11)
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level.
  • The experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.
  • Examples of qualifying experience:
    • GL‑09:
      Providing case‑management services to the local inmate population; collecting, verifying, and analyzing information in preparation of social histories reflecting problematic behavior and social problems; determining inmate needs, program goals, and monitoring progress through development of progress reports; writing correspondence and responses to inquiries from various sources (e.g., attorneys, judges, Congress members, parole offices).
    • GS‑11:
      Counseling functions regarding institutional adjustment, U.S. Parole Commission, release planning, and interpersonal communications; determining programs and treatment options, conducting training, assessing effectiveness, and evaluating individual progress; preparing special progress reports for consideration of parole, transfer, restoration of forfeited good time, and making appropriate recommendations; developing and monitoring special programs, organizing and conducting scheduled meetings or conferences, providing guidance and training to junior staff, supervising and evaluating students and interns.

  • GL‑09 and GS‑11:
    Successful completion of graduate‑level education and specialized experience. The experience must have equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the major duties of this position as described above.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.
