Role DescriptionResponsible for identifying and executing cost-reduction initiatives for legacy products. This role balances manufacturing efficiency, design optimization, and material substitution without compromising product performance, safety, or quality. Focus on sustaining engineering for machined parts, sheet metal components, and machined castings.
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Cost Optimization:
Independently identify cost‑saving opportunities in parts in existing product lines - Design Modification:
Redesign mechanical parts and assemblies using Solid Works - Supplier Engagement:
Work directly with vendors to evaluate manufacturing capabilities, cost structures, resolve bottlenecks, and adopt lower‑cost methods - Material Substitution:
Research and qualify alternative, lower cost materials - DFMA Application:
Apply Design for Manufacturing and Assembly principles to simplify production - Cross‑Functional
Collaboration:
Partner with Procurement, Product Quality, and Manufacturing Engineering teams to implement changes - Testing & Validation:
Plan and execute mechanical testing to validate redesigned components and prepare technical reports to document results - Engineering Change Orders:
Author, review, and release ECOs with updated documentation into the PLM system - Comply with regulatory and quality requirements for medical devices:
- Participate in design reviews and documentation control to satisfy QSR/ISO/CMDR and harmonized standards for design history files
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education & Experience- BS in Mechanical Engineering strongly preferred
- 10+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, mechanical design, or value engineering required
- Strong understanding of CNC machining, sheet metal, sand castings, and associated tooling constraints
- 3+ years of experience with Solid Works required; proficient in part modeling, assembly constraints, and detailed drawings
- Experience preparing ECOs in PLM system (e.g., Arena)
- Experience with mechanical FEA and GD&T
- Familiarity with Six Sigma, VAVE methodologies, or Root Cause Analysis are a bonus
- Experience with complex medical devices is preferred
- Analyze and solve drafting problems
- Assemble facts from various areas, analyze data, and provide informed recommendations
- Work with minimal supervision, take charge of projects, and work effectively in a demanding, fast‑paced environment

- Must be able to sit for long periods of time
- The noise level in the work environment is usually mild
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Interaction with x‑ray devices; strict safety and tracking programs require utilization of dose monitoring equipment either full time or as necessitated by situation
