The ECP Product Development Engineering Co-Op will work alongside a cross-functional team developing next-generation heart pump and vascular access technologies. This is a highly hands-on opportunity focused on designing, building, and evaluating medical device components, test fixtures, and engineering concepts. The co-op may be expected to contribute to:
- Planning and executing hands-on bench testing, including feasibility, characterization, simulated-use, and design verification testing of medical device components and systems.
- Developing and improving test methods by defining procedures, selecting equipment, designing fixtures, troubleshooting setups, and assessing measurement repeatability and robustness.
- Creating and iterating mechanical designs for product components, prototypes, and test fixtures using 3D CAD; support prototype fabrication through 3D printing, machining, or other rapid-prototyping methods.
- Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting test data; summarize results, identify trends or failure modes, and present conclusions and recommendations to the engineering team.
- Supporting root cause investigations and design improvements through structured experimentation, inspection, and collaborative problem-solving.
- Documenting test procedures, experimental results, design work, and engineering conclusions in clear technical reports and presentations while collaborating with Product Development, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and other partners.
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Graduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and enthusiasm for hands-on laboratory work, building test setups, and troubleshooting hardware.
- Foundational knowledge of mechanical design, engineering mechanics, experimental methods, and data analysis, with the ability to apply classroom concepts to practical engineering problems.
- Experience with 3D CAD software; SOLIDWORKS is preferred.
- Ability to organize and analyze data using tools such as Microsoft Excel; experience with statistical analysis software is a plus.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple assignments while working both independently and collaboratively.
- Prior experience with prototyping, machining, 3D printing, laboratory testing, test method development, or medical device projects is preferred but not required.
