Job Description

The field inspector identifies, investigates, and performs quality control for decay and moisture related damage in structures. They assess (not determine) structural integrity, pinpoint water sources, and execute Supervision of repairs, including removing affected wood and replacing it with treated materials to prevent recurrence. The field inspector is an expert in waterproofing, structural framing, and the building envelope.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspection and Diagnosis: Conduct a thorough inspection of buildings using, in some cases, advanced techniques like non-destructive tools to locate dry rot, wet rot, and other timber decay.
  • Structural Assessment: Evaluate the extent of wood deterioration in areas such as framing, siding, decks, roofs, and subfloors.
  • Remediation & Repair: Supervision of repair/replacement of damaged wood and quality control of repairs.
  • Reporting: Prepare detailed inspection reports, including photographs, findings, and recommended corrective actions (not engineering).
Skills and Qualifications
  • Carpentry Expertise: Strong skills in framing and structural repair.
  • Building Envelope Knowledge: Understanding of moisture management, ventilation, and the intricacies of the building envelope.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to spot hidden rot and identify subtle signs of damage, and maintain good organization and time management.
  • Problem-Solving: Developing cost-effective, durable solutions for complex decay issues.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with local building codes and safety regulations.
  • Communication: Must possess the ability to positively interact with other staff members, the general public, subcontractors, government entities, and other clientele.
  • Judgment: Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and a considerable amount of independent judgement.
