ICDT! is a youth-focused performing arts center dedicated to creating inclusive, high-quality theatre experiences for young performers and our community. Position Overview

ICDT! is seeking a dynamic and collaborative Music Director/Assistant Director to co-lead our Jr. Program productions. This part-time position is ideal for a theatre educator who is passionate about introducing young performers to musical theatre in a structured, supportive, and engaging environment.

The Music Director/Assistant Director will be part of a two person team, helping to oversee both the artistic vision and musical instruction for the Jr. production, guiding students through the rehearsal process from auditions to performance. Junior productions are casts of approximately 50 students ages 11-14. This role emphasizes foundational skill-building, ensemble development, and fostering confidence in young performers.

Key Responsibilities Artistic Direction
  • Help develop and communicate a clear, age-appropriate artistic vision for each Jr. production.
  • Assist with auditions and casting in collaboration with director & program leadership.
  • Collaborate on rehearsal schedules and lesson plans aligned with production goals.
  • Maintain a positive, structured, and inclusive rehearsal environment.
Music Direction
  • Teach all vocal music, including harmonies and ensemble numbers.
  • Provide age-appropriate vocal technique instruction.
  • Break down music in accessible ways to support young or first-time performers.
  • Lead music rehearsals, vocal warm ups, and integrate music into staging rehearsals.
  • Prepare & post harmony tracks for students to practice at home
Youth Development & Program Leadership
  • Foster teamwork, confidence, and stage readiness.
  • Support students in learning rehearsal etiquette and performance responsibility.
  • Communicate effectively with families and staff.
  • Model professionalism, patience, and enthusiasm.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong piano proficiency.
  • Experience directing and/or music directing musical theatre.
  • Experience working with elementary and middle school–aged students.
  • Ability to teach harmonies and build ensemble singing skills.
  • Strong organizational and classroom management skills.

Preferred:

  • Degree in Theatre, Music, Music Education, or related field.
  • Experience leading Jr. or youth musical theatre productions.
  • Knowledge of healthy vocal development for young singers.
  • Experience adapting material to fit varying skill levels.
  • Familiarity with rehearsal tracks or music editing software.
Schedule & Commitment

The JR Music Director/ Assistant Director would be needed at weekday rehearsals from 3:45-5:45pm. Additionally, they may be called for production meetings and given prep time. Longer hours during technical rehearsals and performance week will be needed during showtime.
