Director of Adult Education and Literacy
The Director of Adult Education and Literacy supervises and coordinates staff and programs in the Adult Education & Family Literacy Act grant and other funded initiatives. The Director leads grant procurement and development, provides registration, assessment, advising, recruitment, and retention services, manages student data, and generates required reports to the Illinois Community College Board. The position works closely with the Dean of Adult Education, Literacy, and Middle College to provide leadership to the department.
Responsibilities- Assess community needs and develop funding opportunities to expand adult education and literacy programs and increase enrollment.
- Research, develop, write, and submit grant proposals to ICCB supporting the mission and vision of the department.
- Develop, manage, and oversee implementation of program services within the Adult Education & Family Literacy Act Grant, IBT Grant, SOS Literacy Grant, and future grant opportunities.
- Provide leadership to and supervise the Administrative Assistant, Recruitment and Retention Coordinator, Literacy Coordinator, and ABED/ESL instructors.
- Schedule classes each semester for on‑campus and off‑campus sites.
- Collaborate with the Dean, Middle College, College Express, and other leadership to communicate adult education issues and maximize opportunities for student transition to college or workforce.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate teaching and support staff for ABE, GED/HSE, and ESL programs.
- Coordinate initial registration and placement testing for all adult education students.
- Coordinate progress testing with adult education faculty.
- Oversee maintenance of student files, including biographical data, educational levels, funding sources, placement and progress documentation, and other required information.
- Manage class enrollment lists and monitor daily student attendance records.
- Counsel students, especially from vulnerable populations or with special needs, to promote retention and address barriers.
- Develop Bridge and ICAPS programs to facilitate transition of ABED/ESL students to college‑level courses and certificate programs.
- Develop strategies and processes to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of adult education and literacy service delivery.
- Coordinate marketing for the Adult Education and Literacy Program.
- Coordinate with the College’s Registration/Records and Business Office for registration information, mid‑term enrollment verification, and grade rosters.
- Register adult education students and verify financial aid authorizations through the student information system.
- Maintain student information, including enrollment hours, placement and progress scores, class lists, and attendance records.
- Generate required reports to the Illinois Community College Board, including Enrollment, Performance, Master Lists, and Student Profiles.
- Prepare and submit quarterly reports and grant‑mandated reports associated with ICCB.
- Facilitate and host Area Planning Council meetings, develop and submit the Area Plan annually, and monitor student progress through data review and post‑testing.
- Hold meetings with instructors to discuss progress and level changes.
- Cultivate partnerships with internal services (counseling, advising, financial aid, veteran affairs) and external agencies (local government, WIOA, American Job Center) to provide referrals and support services.
- Participate in staff development activities and spearhead coordination of the adult education graduation ceremony.
- Manage the Adult Education, Literacy & Middle College Division in the absence of the Dean.
- Process payroll for Adult Education faculty.
- Develop, coordinate, and report professional development for adult education staff and faculty in accordance with Illinois Community College Board requirements.
- Supervise work‑study/Student Worker employees.
- Coordinate program orientation activities and assist with the student .
- Participate in the strategic planning process for the Adult Education, Literacy & Middle College Division.
