Construction Occupation Instructor, Department of Corrections Responsibilities

  • Deliver hands‑on and classroom instruction in construction trades (e.g., carpentry, electrical basics, masonry, HVAC fundamentals).
  • Adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning styles and academic levels.
  • Integrate employability (soft) skills such as teamwork, communication, and work ethic.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and structured learning environment within a correctional setting.
  • Motivate and engage individuals in custody in skill development and career pathways.
  • Provide academic support, feedback, and progress monitoring.
  • Promote personal responsibility, accountability, and job readiness.
  • Enforce strict adherence to facility security protocols and tool control procedures.
  • Maintain a safe training environment, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate with correctional staff to ensure compliance with institutional policies.
  • Immediately report incidents, safety concerns, or behavioral issues.
  • Maintain inventory and accountability of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Assist in program development, including updating curriculum and recommending equipment.
  • Track and report student outcomes, certifications, and completions.
  • Develop and administer assessments to evaluate student learning and skill attainment.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, competencies, and progress.
  • Participate in program evaluation and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Participate in professional development related to construction trades, teaching methods, and correctional education.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends, tools, and technologies.
  • Communicate effectively with college administration and correctional staff.
  • Uphold ethical standards and maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
  • Operate within restricted movement, schedules, and materials access.
  • Demonstrate patience, cultural awareness, and trauma‑informed approaches.
  • Maintain flexibility in response to facility lockdowns or schedule changes.
  • Submit purchase order requests for instructional supplies and equipment.
  • Attend instructor meetings, DACC InService or other meetings as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience in Construction Trades.
  • Must be able to layout truss rafters, wall sections, hang windows and doors, perform drywall installation and finishing.
  • Skills in masonry and electrical and plumbing required.
  • Must be able to lift and transport 50 pounds.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Have the ability to perform general classroom activities.
  • Drug testing.
Desired Qualifications
  • Associate Degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of estimating procedures.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
