JOB OVERVIEW:

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (UVM)

The Equipment Operator
- Utility Vegetation Management (UVM) plays a critical role in supporting safe, efficient, and compliant vegetation management operations within energized utility rights-of-way and other utility infrastructure corridors. This position is primarily responsible for operating specialized forestry and land-clearing equipment used to control, remove, and maintain vegetation that may impact electrical transmission and distribution systems, while protecting employees, the public, utility assets, and the environment.

This position directly contributes to operational productivity, regulatory compliance, and wildfire risk reduction by safely operating heavy equipment in complex environments that often include hazardous terrain, active utility infrastructure, environmentally sensitive areas, and changing field conditions. The Equipment Operator works closely with Forepersons, General Forepersons, Vegetation Management crews, and utility clients to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company and client standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment Operations:

• Safely operate specialized utility vegetation management equipment as the primary function of the position.
• Perform vegetation clearing, grinding, mowing, mulching, land clearing, access road maintenance, and vegetation control activities in utility rights-of-way and utility service areas.
• Operate equipment including, but not limited to:
  • Skid steer masticators
  • Forestry mulchers
  • Tree shears
  • Excavators
  • Jarraff tree trimmers
  • Fecon and similar forestry attachments
  • Brush cutting attachments
  • Tracked and wheeled vegetation management equipment
  • Other specialized non-road-bound machinery authorized by the Company
• Maintain equipment control and safe operating distances when working near energized conductors, utility structures, roadways, public areas, and crew personnel.
• Adjust operating methods to accommodate varying terrain, environmental conditions, vegetation types, and site-specific hazards.
• Operate only equipment for which documented authorization, training, and qualification have been completed.

Safety & Compliance:

• Follow all Arbor Works, client, OSHA, ANSI A300, ANSI Z133, and applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
• Maintain continuous awareness of electrical hazards, minimum approach distances, and utility-specific work requirements.
• Participate in daily job briefings, hazard assessments, tailgate meetings, and safety discussions.
• Immediately report incidents, near misses, equipment damage, hazards, and unsafe conditions.
• Utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure compliance with all safety protocols.
• Support emergency response activities and storm restoration efforts when required.

Equipment Inspection & Maintenance:

• Conduct and document daily pre-trip, operational, and post-operation inspections.
• Monitor equipment performance and identify maintenance or repair needs.
• Perform routine operator-level servicing such as lubrication, fluid checks, cleaning, and minor adjustments.
