Position: Corrections Education Teacher (family/consumer science assignment)

Corrections Education Teacher

This position is located at the North Central Secure Treatment Unit (NCSTU), which is a residential corrections facility for adjudicated male youth. The NCSTU is located in Danville, PA.

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) - Corrections Campus

The Corrections Education Teacher at NCSTU will be responsible for the daily instruction and progress reporting in family and consumer sciences content areas for students in a particular school program on the corrections campus, based on individual need.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and delivers developmentally appropriate Family and Consumer Sciences instruction for middle and high school students in accordance with Pennsylvania Academic Standards, district curriculum, and established instructional goals.
  • Provides instruction in applicable Family and Consumer Sciences content areas, including food and nutrition, health and wellness, consumer and family resource management, personal finance, human development, family and interpersonal relationships, career exploration, and practical life skills.
  • Develops engaging, relevant, and hands-on learning experiences that connect classroom instruction to independent living, employment, family, and community responsibilities.
  • Differentiates instruction and implements required accommodations, modifications, and supports to meet the individual learning needs of students, including requirements identified through individualized education programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans.
  • Establishes and maintains a safe, structured, respectful, and productive learning environment that promotes student engagement, responsibility, and appropriate behavior.
  • Provides direct instruction and supervision in the safe and appropriate use of food preparation equipment, appliances, tools, instructional materials, and other Family and Consumer Sciences laboratory equipment.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records of student attendance, grades, progress, assessments, and other required documentation.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with administrators, teachers, Department of Human Services (DHS) personnel, parents/guardians, and other appropriate stakeholders to support student achievement and program goals.
  • Maintains classroom and laboratory equipment, instructional materials, and supplies and promptly reports safety, maintenance, or replacement needs in accordance with program procedures.
  • Participates in required professional development, meetings, curriculum activities, and other professional responsibilities and maintains appropriate Pennsylvania certification and professional requirements.

    Education, Experience, and

    Skills Required:

    • Minimum requirement is a bachelor's degree with a major in education or field specific degree program with an emphasis on education.
    • A valid Pennsylvania teacher certification in 5600-Family and Consumer Science PK-12 is required pursuant to CSPG 44-Family and Consumer Sciences PK-12. A candidate with a bachelor's degree and willingness to obtain a Type 01 Long-Term Substitute Teacher with Educational Obligation emergency permit with education obligation in the area of 5600-Family and Consumer Science PK-12 will be considered.
    • A demonstrated ability to work with at-risk populations and the ability to work productively with the agency and residential staff are essential.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to properly maintain open channels of communication with agencies, school districts, parents, members of higher education institutions, etc.
    • Must have the ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues, co-workers, community agency personnel, and students/trainees.
    • Requires the ability to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships using tact and diplomacy and to remain calm in unpredictable situations.
