Overview

This is currently a hybrid role - 2 days remote and 3 days in the Malvern, PA office, subject to Company policy and practices.

Summary Lead

The Director, Risk Management is responsible for developing and executing the Company’s strategic risk management plan to identify, prioritize and manage risk within the organization. The position will lead the Company’s efforts with insurance planning and budgeting across multiple insurance lines (e.g., property, general liability, umbrella liability, crime, cyber, flood, construction, auto, environmental, and other specialty coverages) and manage the status of claims, provide support in litigation, identify trends, and quantify exposures.

This position requires a forward-thinking professional who can balance quantitative analysis with strategic insight, collaborating cross-functionally within and outside the organization to anticipate emerging risks in real estate, self-storage operations, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance. The Director, Risk Management will be able to communicate risk and insurance matters to the broader Company in easily understood terms and concepts. The Director, Risk Management will report to the Chief Legal Officer.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead a comprehensive risk management framework integrating strategic, operational, financial, and compliance risks across the REIT, its subsidiaries, captive insurer and protection plan. Leverage data-driven insights to identify exposures, model risk scenarios, and inform decision‑making.
  • Direct all corporate and facility‑level insurance programs, including property, liability, environmental, professional, cyber, and D&O lines. Lead negotiations with brokers, carriers, and reinsurers, leveraging scale and data analytics to optimize program efficiency and pricing.
  • Program design and administration, market selection, and policy documentation for coverages - including property, casualty, customer stored goods, employment practices liability, workers’ compensation, general liability, product liability, directors and officers, fiduciary, crime, pollution, and excess liability.
  • Oversee strategy, structure, and performance of the captive insurance company, ensuring optimal capitalization, underwriting discipline, and regulatory compliance. Evaluate retention levels, reinsurance structures, and coverage scope to align with the REIT’s evolving risk appetite and balance sheet objectives.
  • Oversee administration and management of our third‑party management insurance program, and customer protection plan, risk management information system provider, brokers, third party administrators, and other vendors and insurance carriers. Establish processes to evaluate compliance with key performance indicators and work with service providers to identify and implement best practices.
  • Partner with executive leadership, operations, and legal teams to assess risk implications for major acquisitions, development projects, partnerships, and capital initiatives. Provide input on risk‑adjusted returns, resilience planning.
