Geisinger is piloting a new model of care on our Advanced Acute Care Units at the Danville, Bloomsburg, and Shamokin campuses. The model utilizes more Patient Care Technician staff to perform duties that do not require a nursing license. It gives technicians more opportunity for career advancement, autonomy, and involvement in patient care.
Primary duties may include:
- Primary facilitator of ADLs: hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals
- Collecting vital signs and daily weights
- Conducting point‑of‑care testing
- Turning and repositioning patients
- Performing equipment checks and exchanges
- Providing dressing care
- Removal of Foley catheter and peripheral IV
- Nasogastric tube removal and nasal swab performance
- Checking code carts and oxygen storage cabinets

May perform a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, maintaining the patient care environment consistent with policies, procedures, and standards. The role includes responsibilities for patients in specific age ranges on assigned clinical areas.
- Provides enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, including dressing care, Foley catheter and peripheral IV removal
- Documents appropriately to create a complete and accurate medical record
- Identifies, observes, and documents the physical needs of the patient according to established standards; reports any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel promptly
- Obtains and maintains specimen integrity per policy and physician orders
- Assists patients with activities of daily living; fulfills delegated responsibilities for continuum of care, including hygiene and linen changes
- Provides one‑to‑one patient safety watch as assigned
- Accurately processes specimens and transports them promptly to the laboratory
- Performs point‑of‑care patient testing, instrument maintenance, and quality control
- Assists in problem solving, troubleshooting, and corrective measures for equipment and supplies
- Serves as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students
- Performs clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths; transcribes and processes orders per unit standards
