Seasonal Carpenter

National Park Service

Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of journey-level carpentry trade work needed to construct, alter, maintain, and repair wooden buildings, structures, cabins, ships, boats, docks, boardwalks, bridges, floors, decks, handrails, fences, signs, partitions, panels, and/or other items made of wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials.

Responsibilities
  • Construction, alteration, installation, repair and modification of items and structures such as framework, rafters, concrete forms, walls, doors, finished paneling, window frames, interior and exterior trims, staircases, trusses, beams, workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, and computer consoles where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance are important.
  • Acts as an inspector on outside contracts and on work performed by less skilled workers of the trade.
  • Constructs, rehabilitates, modifies and assembles structures from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions, including framework rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, interior and exterior trims, staircases, trusses and beams, as well as small buildings and building interior finishing.
  • Repairs doors, windows, wood substitute items, exterior siding, flooring, and interior fabric as necessary during stabilization/restoration to ensure completeness and structural integrity; repairs roof sheathing and rafters as required.
  • Fabricates duplicate replacements of deteriorated wood members such as moldings, beams, timbers, and stairways; performs precise angle and curved cuts as needed.
Requirements (Conditions of Employment)
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet the Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Direct deposit required; participation in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Uniform required, with allowance provided; compliance with NPS uniform standards.
  • Occupancy of government quarters required.
  • Government charge card required; training may be necessary to obtain and maintain travel/purchase authority.
  • Minimum age requirement: 18 years old, or 16 years old with high‑school graduation or equivalent, or completion of a formal vocational training program, or a statement from school authorities expressing a preference for employment over continuing education, or enrollment in a secondary school with work only during vacation or part‑time during the school year.
Qualifications
  • Ability to perform the work without more than normal supervision (screen‑out).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Knowledge of materials.
  • Measurement and layout skills.
  • Technical practices (theoretical precision, artistic skill).

Volunteer Experience

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands

The incumbent must sit, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in uncomfortable positions; may need to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and may lift or carry items exceeding 50 pounds. Protective clothing, gloves, face shields, respirators, ladders, scaffolds, rooftops, and elevated platforms may be required.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in indoor workshops and outdoor sites; may be subject to extreme weather, wind, rain, snow, ice, and temperatures from below 0 to over 100 °F; elevations may range up to 10,000 feet. Exposure to sawdust, noise, fumes, vibration, cuts, abrasions, hazardous materials, and wildlife is possible. Protective equipment must be worn and safety/occupational health requirements followed.
