JOB DESCRIPTION HEAD TRACK AND FIELD COACH - HIGH SCHOOLPart-Time

NATURE OF POSITIONTraining and instruction of student athletes, maintaining appropriate practice and play schedules, and conforming to all diocesan, school, league, and PIAA policies and procedures for athletics. Professionally represent the School, the Diocese, and the community in keeping with the school's Catholic character and Gospel values. All Head coaches are under the immediate supervision of the Athletic Director.
JOB DESCRIPTION (General)- Apply knowledge of skills, techniques, and rules of the sport to assist athletes in reaching their fullest potential.
- Develop positive team spirit and morale.
- Display sound methods to teach skills and techniques.
- Maintain discipline in a firm and friendly manner.
- Conduct well-planned practice sessions.
- Help with the issuing, inventory, and cleaning of equipment.
- Work with appropriate community organizations to foster the development of a feeder program within the high school and parishes.
- Assist the athletic director with recruiting qualified coaches for the program.
- Help the Athletic Director annually evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the program.
- Establish and maintain a positive line of communication with student athletes, parents, and the community.
- Implement the Coaching Philosophy of Bishop McDevitt in the program.
- Implement the school and Diocesan Athletic Philosophy and program of Christian formation.
- Establish and maintain a positive relationship with all members of the coaching staff.
- Support the philosophy and decisions of the Athletic Director.
- Perform duties assigned by the Athletic Director.
- Review the academic progress of student‑athletes and the ineligibility list.
- Maintain appropriate communication with student‑athletes.
- Demonstrate and generate respect for student‑athletes.
- Serve as a role model to student‑athletes and demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.
- Maintain an appropriate rapport with players' parents/guardians. If concerns arise, attempt to address them directly. If a solution is not reached, notify the Athletic Director to set up a meeting.
- Support the philosophy of the Athletic Department and the decisions of the Administration.
- Develop and maintain a positive rapport with other members of the Bishop McDevitt Athletic Department, Professional Staff, and Administration. Athletic Personnel should treat other staff members with respect and professional courtesy at all times.
- Review and understand the rules of the sport, as well as the rules and regulations of Mid Penn, District III, and PIAA.
- Possess the ability to teach, develop, and improve athlete’s skills.
- Possess knowledge of schemes and tactics as related to the sport.
- Demonstrate strength of interest in coaching sport.
- Demonstrate attendance and punctuality; be prompt for meetings, practices, and games.
- Demonstrate respect for student-athletes, coaches, and officials.
- Demonstrate the ability to motivate student athletes.
- Accompany the team at all contests, both home and away.
- Assist with the organization of practices and contests.
- Sufficient education to meet knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- A high school coach has to be familiar with the rules and regulations of the sports they plan on coaching. This is acquired through playing and studying the sport. There are no specific education requirements for a high school, but many possess a bachelor's degree in sports science, exercise, kinesiology, fitness, physical education, or physiology.
- A coach has to be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and partake in any necessary training or education programs required by the school or state.
- A high school coach must be able to set an example for the players.
- Must have excellent communication skills, allowing them to inspire players and work with them on improvement.
