SHP Youth Mental Health Educator

Starr Hill Pathways (SHP) is a middle school to college pipeline program for low-income and prospective first generation college-going youth in Charlottesville and Albemarle County Public Schools. Ameri Corps members support youth development as part of Virginia’s Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC), which uses a near-peer model to engage young adults in local Ameri Corps service to support youth. Corps volunteers will complete certifications and credentials to prepare them for careers in behavioral health, while creating expanded mental health services for youth.

Members will participate in evidence-based mental health training and practice. Members will participate in a variety of enriching experiential and didactic learning opportunities which will facilitate their professional development. Members will have the opportunity to obtain mental health certifications that may provide many job opportunities within the mental health field in Virginia. Members serve approximately 25 hours/week over the course of nine months.

Serving 20 hours weekly in total when accounting for training hours;12-14 direct service hours will be served in the fall 14-16 hours served weekly in the spring. Potential service/practicum options include supporting a local CSBs in addressing community mental health needs, working with foundations to address youth mental health challenges in the community and build resilience, and working with the nonprofits to provide resources to young mothers in need of housing and mentoring to teens in the community.

Additionally, members will be placed in local high schools to train youth and adults in suicide prevention awareness and will potentially support care coordination for high school students. This will be done through the Sources of Strength suicide prevention training program, a strengths-based program which takes an upstream approach to suicide prevention in schools. As outlined in the training plan, all core Ameri Corps members will be expected to participate in training.
