Job Overview

Reports to:

Sr Weld Process Engineer Additive Manufacturing – AAT. Supervises: N/A.

Responsibilities
  • Direct all operations associated with weldments and other types of applied joints to meet contract documents, codes, and standards.
  • Lead activities from pre‑production welding through post‑production review to ensure satisfactory weld quality.
  • Select appropriate welding methods and develop welding parameters and qualifications.
  • Prepare, review, approve, and release written welding procedures in accordance with specifications and weld procedure qualifications.
  • Prepare customer submittals for approvals and authorize repairs when required.
  • Support shop floor fabrication operations, including preparation for upcoming work, troubleshooting welding issues, and generating process improvement ideas.
  • Conduct process efficiency studies to reduce schedule and cost.
  • Maintain and document welding procedures, equipment, and tooling needs.
  • Review quote packages to support estimates for qualification manufacturing feasibility and provide technical input.
  • Recommend new welding processes, tooling, and equipment for potential application to Austal USA processes.
  • Develop and implement work instructions for part fit‑up, tack, weld, and repair requirements.
  • Recommend design changes that improve quality, reliability, and productivity of welding processes.
  • Develop and implement validation documents and procedures for welding equipment and processes to meet or exceed customer specifications.
  • Evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials in welding for possible application to Austal USA processes.
  • Manage weld sequencing to control distortion and collaborate with Accuracy Control to predict shrinkage in ferrous and nonferrous metals.
  • Apply knowledge of heat treatment applications and additive manufacturing parameter development.
  • Troubleshoot production welding issues, including welding defects.
  • Act as subject‑matter expert for all welding processes performed.
  • Conduct visual weld inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Operations Manager.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or Welding Engineering Technology is required.
  • ABET‑accredited Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • At least 7 years of welding engineering experience.
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification is preferred.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office and AutoCAD).
  • Ability to work well with people at all levels.
  • Ability to read key plans and specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Hands‑on management experience.
  • Theoretical understanding of gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc, submerged arc, and stud welding processes.
  • Understanding of welding ferrous and nonferrous base metals and appropriate filler metal selection.
  • Knowledge of nondestructive testing methods for welds.
Tools
  • Personal computing and other electronic communication devices and software programs.
  • Basic hand tools, sanders, grinders, overhead cranes, forklifts, and machinery components.
