Austal USA Advanced Technologies (AAT) is a division of Austal USA, a global defense prime contractor. AAT operates a technology hub in Charlottesville, VA and oversees the U.S. Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Danville, VA.
As a Manufacturing Engineer III, you will play a pivotal role in the production work performed at the Navy’s AM COE in Danville. You will provide technical leadership on assigned projects, support the Navy in developing new technical requirements for additive manufacturing of submarine parts, and collaborate with production teams to ensure technical work scopes are well defined and maintained.
Reports To: Operations Manager
SUPERVISES: May lead and direct the work of others as assigned.
Responsibilities- Provide technical leadership of assigned tasks set by the Operations Manager.
- Review statements of work, technical drawings, and identify applicable MIL‑STD or other specifications.
- Define, generate, and review project technical requirements and documentation with Operations.
- Assess technical feasibility and identify additional resources needed to fulfill requirements and meet deliverables.
- Determine the relevance of existing, standard requirements for additively manufactured components.
- Monitor assigned tasks and deliverables to ensure technical work scopes are well defined and maintained.
- Oversee and direct the technical work of assigned personnel on related projects.
- Conduct and attend meetings as required.
- Support resolution of engineering, material, process, and planning issues.
- Support implementation of improved engineering processes.
- Coordinate with resource managers/supervisors and ensure all necessary reviews and approvals are received.
- Gather and analyze shop performance metrics to support recommendations for production improvement.
- Develop and maintain performance throughput metrics for all areas of the AMCOE to assist in process improvement.
- Prepare complex written and/or graphic materials to convey information to internal and external customers.
- Assist in the identification and implementation of improvements to processes.
- Maximize the efficiency of equipment and personnel.
- Support department improvement initiatives.
- Provide motivation, maintain morale, minimize confrontation, and encourage positive communication and flexibility within the team.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
- Minimum five years’ experience in manufacturing (additive manufacturing preferred).
- Demonstrated knowledge of reading prints, technical documentation, and customer requirements.
- Experience in identifying and anticipating design/production work sequence conflicts.
- Proficient in CAD.
- Familiar with additive manufacturing, welding, machining, metrology, destructive testing, non‑destructive testing, heat treatment, and military specifications.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required.
- Eligibility: 18 years or older; proof of U.S. Person status.
- No felony convictions of theft, deception, or violent crimes within seven years; no felony convictions of drug crimes within three years.
- Willing to submit to a drug screen and background check.
Work environment may involve exposure to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather, and extreme heat or cold. May be exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles at or below the permissible exposure limit, toxic or caustic chemicals, heat, and cold. Ability to bend, squat, climb ladders, and occasionally lift and carry up to 40lbs. Must be able to use basic hand tools, measurement tools, forklift, and crane.
