Maintenance Technician – Full Time
Located in South Central Virginia, The Hughes Center is a highly-structured psychiatric residential treatment facility for youth ages 10 to 22 with neurodevelopmental disorders. The Hughes Center also provides private, community-based educational services. We provide both individualized and holistic care for adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a nurturing, family-friendly environment. We utilize a multidisciplinary team approach to provide comprehensive evaluations and evidence-based treatment (and educational) interventions with the intent to increase each youth’s level of functional independence.
Our team also works diligently to address or manage medical conditions and challenging behaviors that are often associated with individuals who are diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders. We challenge our residents to adapt to and apply learned skills within new environments and situations, and to maintain functional use of these skills when they return to their homes or other community-based settings.
We are currently looking for an attentive, knowledgeable, flexible, dependable, and self-motivated individual to fulfill the role of Maintenance Technician.

Job DescriptionThe Maintenance Technician performs a variety of duties of skilled/semi-skilled nature which support the facility's preventive and restorative maintenance management programs.
Essential Duties- Maintenance of building equipment and heating and air conditioning equipment based on preventative maintenance scheduling
- Maintenance of electrical, food service equipment and furniture
- Repair and troubleshooting of components for heating, ventilating and air conditioning
- Inspection, repair, and troubleshooting of fire equipment
- Inspect plumbing equipment; valves, stems, faucets and pump motors
- Investigation of environmental problems involving resident or staff safety
- Investigate malfunctioning equipment related directly or indirectly to resident and staff safety.
- Log completed preventive maintenance tasks
- Initiate appropriate computer-controlled adjustments to correct discrepancies in environmental and lighting systems
- Maintain, operate and program computer-based building automation systems which regulate lighting, heating and cooling of the facility.
- Monitor and operate fire alarm systems
- Respond to routine maintenance calls as well as complex repairs of facility equipment and systems as required
- Perform other assigned duties as necessary, including work after hours and 24/7 callback rotation
- Use of applicable instruments, tools and equipment in operating, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing the facility, utility systems and BAS
- Recognize occupational hazards and take appropriate steps to correct
- Ability to operate major mechanical and electrical equipment for the production of the distribution of utilities
- Follow written and oral instructions
- Analyze and describe specific maintenance problems and recommend or perform viable solutions within the parameters of code and regulatory requirements
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, diagrams and drawings
- Familiarity with the use and operation of maintenance related tools and equipment
- Familiarity with computer applications as they pertain to various facility equipment
- Good customer service skills
Job Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must complete and pass a pre-hire drug screen & pre-hire background checks
- Must be able to meet all training requirements
- Valid driver’s license in the person’s state of residence
- Ability to lift 25 pounds in normal working conditions, the ability to lift 50 pounds as the job requires.
- Ability to bend, stoop, climb a ladder, kneel and lift. Ability to be on your feet and walk significant distances the majority of your shift.
- Must reflect behavior, attitude, and appearance appropriate to the position and be supportive of the facility and division philosophy, goals, and objectives
- High school education or equivalent
- Must be able to read and write
- Four years of maintenance experience or formal training
- Two years of maintenance experience in a healthcare setting preferred
